A True Life Best Buy Story

Well, it actually didn't happen in Best Buy, but in an LA Fitness. I'm not saying where because I have so many haters on here, they might come looking for me.

Anyway, I was at the LA Fitness and I saw this big, older guy with massive sloping shoulders and long arms. So, I made a casual comment to him: "You must've been a basketball player."

He mumbled in the affirmative.

"NBA?"

"Yep."

"Really ... what team?"

"Chicago Bulls."

"Really ....... what's your name?"

"Clifford Ray."

"Clifford Ray, wow! I remember you," I said and clearly recognized him now as I watched those teams many times on TV. "You played with Jerry Sloan."

"Yep, he was my roommate for a while."

"Wow, you had a great team, just couldn't get over the hump.

"Yeah, but I did, and if the Bulls didn't trade me, they might've gotten over the hump."

"That's right you went to Golden State and won the title with Rick Barry."

We chitchatted awhile about the current Jazz. I mentioned the Jazz players going to Chicago, and then Clifford said, "Yeah, but the guy that was a big loss was Matthews."

I agreed.

"Jerry told me," he said. "It really hurt to lose Matthews, but that his hands were tied, it was the decision of the owner and General Manager."

Well, after a little more chit chat, we parted. And yes, this really did happen. In fact, I'm even more sure of this than that One Brow is Aint.

It’s not a BB story unless you get something juicy like “Jerry Sloan punched KOC in the mouth because he let Wesley go” or “Sloan is actually Matt Harpring’s father”. Anyway, thanks for sharing. You must have been around back in the day to know so much about the guy. I never even heard of him.

Yes, I was around. He was the Bulls center, and then the center on the Warriors team that won it all. He wasn't much on offense, but he was a tenacious defender and rebounder, similar to Ben Wallace when he was in his prime, and undersized like Wallace, but massively built.

Nah, I didn't want to follow him back to his house ... he probably would squash me like a bug if he knew I was stalking him.

Either you really were stalking him, or you suck at being a reporter.

Thanks, McFly. Just thought the board would be interested in what was really going on in Jerry's head. I found it interesting too. I never prompted Clifford Ray to reveal that info about Matthews. We were talking about the Bulls and I mentioned Ronnie Brewer ... yes, I left out a few things ... and out of the blue, he brings up Matthews.

And Archie, I'm not a stalker and I wasn't referring to you, as being a jerk. Anyway, I'm not a stalker; I just wanted the guy to get off my back. Like I wish some people who keep giving me **** would learn some manners. But I am seriously considering to stop posting here, and just sit back and read what you guys write.

Wow, some of the people on this board smell blood and it's on. All you need to do is show that you care, just a little bit, about the negative things they say and they're on you like a rat on a Cheeto. I, for one, welcome people who have interesting stories to tell like that and who don't dish out sarcasm and personal attacks with every other post. Bravo write4u, it was an excellent little story that was superbly told. Also, kudos for writing something that would have English teachers applauding instead of cringing.

You have 1-800-flowers on speed dial, don't you.

No, there's on online store that I like better, it requires no human interaction. :)

I just liked the story and want my voice to be heard that it's a great to get posts every now and again that aren't dripping with sarcasm or demeaning someone for a cheap laugh.
