I doubt getting rid of him is worth the 4th pick in the draft to the Bobcats, unless they need the cap space to sign a free agent this summer. They aren't going to win anything anytime soon, and it's highly unlikely they'll mortgage their future for a few extra wins over the next two seasons.

Bobcats have the cap room to just sign Jefferson independently as a free agent. No need to trade #4 and I don't even think that trade is allowed.

No. Free agency doesn't begin until after the draft. You would wait until the free agency period, then do a S&T and include the RIGHTS to the player that was drafted. But S&T's can only be done if you're trading with a team under the cap. And, in the case of an UFA, the only motivation for a team to make a trade is to give that player more years and/or more money than they could by just signing him as an UFA. I don't think that will apply to either Millsap or Jefferson. No one is going to wantt o give those guys MAX money for 6 years.

And, in the case of an UFA, the only motivation for a team to make a trade is to give that player more years and/or more money than they could by just signing him as an UFA. I don't think that will apply to either Millsap or Jefferson. No one is going to wantt o give those guys MAX money for 6 years.

Thanks for the corrections. It is 5 years for "Bird" FA's and 4 for all others. I thought it was 6/5. And thanks for the correction re: being under the cap. Not sure where I picked that up, but it does appear I misspoke and I'm man enough to admit my error.

But as to the original point, I guess I just don't see teams that will be motivated to do S&T's for Jefferson or Millsap. Those guys aren't stars and Utah is NOT going to take back bad contracts. I think Lindsey and KOC are really waiting for the trade deadline, when teams might be DESPERATE to offload a salary in order to escape the 1.5-2X tax penalty - and the JAZZ will set up a bidding war for their cap space, demanding either a very good starter or a very high draft pick in the case of taking on a lesser player's contract.

I could see the Jazz using one of them in a sign and trade for a player like Eric Gordon (not that I'm advocating for a move like that), where one team wants assets back for a player with high upside but significant question marks. Or potentially a team over the cap looking to package a few of its lower priced role players for an impact player (what Indiana should be looking to do with Mahinmi/Hansbrough/Green/Young/Augustin...albeit probably not for Millsap/Jefferson).

Nope, not at all. As you said, the S&T mistake I made has been mentioned by others. And your second option does seem plausible. Utah needs to fill out the roster. Maybe they go the Houston route by taking on some lower-level contracts that can easily be moved at the deadline in order to reach the salary floor. I still say, however, if the penalty for not paying out the minimum is simply that the difference gets distributed to the existing players, then it would be smart to just sign vet-minimum or rookies to fill out the roster. Utah MIGHT be able to steal a player or two at the deadline if they can simply take on the entire salary without having to give players back in return.
