Al Jefferson, Down Home, talkin Sloan and Deron

This is about a 12 minute video Jefferson did at his hometown down in good ole Mississippi. Nuthin too excitin, but his sincerity comes through, as usual.

Among other things, he mentioned the "mad respect" he had for Deron even before he came to the Jazz and about how he's convinced that Deron will raise his game. Similiar sentiments about Sloan. Said he "absorbed" great respect for Sloan from his coaches at Boston (Rivers and Randy Wittman), and he is convinced that Sloan and Sloan's system will make him better.

What sort of a name is Prentiss?

Does there really need to be an extra s?

Mississippi is just obsessed with s`s

Joint was named after a guy with two first names, each startin with a "S," as ya would naturally expect, eh, Mambo?

"Prentiss County is named for Seargent Smith Prentiss, a famous speaker and debater from Natchez, MS. (Seargent was his first name, not a military title)."

I live in Mississippi, it isnt that bad if you dont live in the middle of it. The far north or the gulf coast are fairly nice places to live.

Jefferson is anxious to play with Williams. So is Raja Bell:

"I've had to guard him at times and it's not fun," Raja Bell said. "He's got this uncanny ability, that most great point guards do, of being able to take over a game when it needs to be taken over offensively. I think he's great. I think he's a big, solid point guard. You know, I'm really excited about being able to spot up somewhere or come off some of those pin downs and get some shots up." (Bell--LINK)

Both players also said they want to play for Sloan. Gettin free agents to Utah aint so hard when ya got a coach the better players would love to play for and an all-star point guard who attracts them, eh?

Jazz might be just one player away from creating their own "Big Three" and giving Deron a reason to stay beyond his current contract. Whatever the outcome of the CBA, you know they'll make it even more attractive for players to remain with their original teams.

Jazz will have two all-stars in their mid-20's, another solid player in Millsap and hopefully a good young player in Hayward. IF CJ can continue to develop, maybe AK gets traded for a top-tier starter (hoping!!!).

Maybe you still keep Memo and either have CJ or Hayward off the bench (one starts at a wing, the other starter is whoever we get in an AK deal). Ideally, with $17M maybe you could get a starter and a backup big.

The Jefferson acquisition has changed EVERYTHING! It shows Deron that the Millers are serious about winning. I find myself liking Al and Raja more and more each day. I guess when we've had so many players come out and say they hate Utah, reinforced by the media over and over again...it's Fantastic when a couple of very good players say just the opposite.

You forget Tomic, the next European Sensation.

It doesn't hurt to have hall of famers like Stockton, and now Malone, vouchin for ole Jer, eh?

Malone on the Jazz (who he thinks are better with Jefferson):

"Even though he retired five years ago, Malone still keeps close tabs on the Jazz, although he admits he's not that objective. "I don't care who they're playing," said the NBA's second all-time leading scorer. "I'm still biased. They could be down 0-3 in a series, I'm still biased. Because as long as I got a Jerry Sloan coached team, and the guys on the team are competitors and love to win, they got a chance."

I don't know if Jefferson has talked to Malone, but I do know Jefferson said his Mama was a huge Karl Malone fan and that he too followed Malone's career closely while he was growin up because Karl was a southern boy like him. So if he does, I spect Jefferson will listen attentively.

Malone on Jefferson:

Malone says new power forward Al Jefferson is going to shine in Jerry Sloan's system. "He's going to help them," said Malone about Jefferson. "With coach Sloan, they're going to put him in a position to succeed. But he needs to listen to coach Sloan and just do his job."

Al Jefferson will be a superstar in Utah, book it. If Williams-AJ is ANYTHING like Stockton to Malone, then we'll win a championship based on the supporting cast we have.

Sorta off topic, but does anyone else feel like we haven't seen the last of Matthews? The boy has unfinished business here.. if he makes a career for himself, I can see him coming back here for sure, even years down the road

I'm sorry we lost him and would be happy to see him come back. That said, Bell might well fill his role better than he did--he just old, that's all. When he's completely worn out, Portland may pay us a few million to take Matthews' contract off their hands, who knows?
