Al Jefferson Still An Average Rebounder?

Jefferson's Def Reb rate is clearly better than any other Jazzman the last two years.

He's definitely an above average individual rebounder. His team rebounding is significantly less impressive. It pretty obviously tells you that he swallows most everything that comes to him, but doesn't box out terribly well, which is basically what you'll find by, you know, watching the game, save for the fact that he grabs most everything that he touches.
Dude was tied for 23rd among 52 qualified NBA centers in Rebounding Rate last season. How that + poor team rebounding (50.2% team rebounding on-court, 55.4% team rebounding off-court...easily the worst difference among the Jazz's 4 bigs last season...and what seems quite obvious to the ol' eyes) = "clearly above average", I do not know.

It's because he doesn't get offensive boards.

What qualifies as "qualified?" Also, have to include any big. That includes Power Forwards.

EDIT: Ah. Found what you were using. Hollingers player stats. Jefferson was ninth in defensive rebound rate last year, and that's what we're concerned with in this discussion. If you want to bring OReb% into play, fine, but Garnett's OReb% is MUCH worse than Jefferson's, and you wouldn't call Garnett a below average rebounder, would you?

867,000 rep points to anyone who can make a gif of Jefferson abusing Garnett in the 4th quarter of the celtics game, only to have his thunder stolen by Mo Mo

What? Why?

All the talk is about his defensive rebounds. I highly doubt anyone refers to his offensive rebounding to describe his rebounding ability.

Do you still prefer to ignore Jefferson's ninth ranking of 52 in defensive rebounding?

Good point. Defensive rebounds are easy, just sacrifice all effort on team defense, make at least a half hearted box out, and you'll generally be in optimal position to get them. We saw this with Boozer for over half a decade. That is what I'm seeing from Jefferson this year, a whole lot of Boozeresque type play on the defensive end. Likely attempted stat padding knowing his contract is coming up.

If you want to make that argument, then fine, but at absolute worst, he's an average to slightly above average rebounder. Very steady, which makes him not exceedingly reliable when you HAVE to have a rebound.

He's at 20.2 TRB% this year so far.

In these lists, Big Al is a better/more active offensive player than all but the HOF'ers pretty much. Dennis Rodman was a great rebounder (see all the TRB on him if you like.) But he was a one dimensional player - but is a HOFer... Jefferson is ahead of Olajuwan(sp) career wise. These "best rebounder" lists are not top heavy with guys with big offense.

Big difference in Al's game has been his effort level. As his minutes and shot attempts have gone down his rebounding numbers have gone up. Turnovers too, but IMO that is mostly due to him trying so much harder to initiate transition instead of hugging the ball.

Odd but less is more, and especially more well rounded.

sup big al haters. tell me how these stats taste.

Dude, BigAl was abused by Kosta Koufos a couple of games ago, so who cares about his stats (and he had 11 rebounds that game).

And it's not about the hate, it's about who he really is in this ball game.

it's not about hate
it's about defense, killer instinct and the will to win.

al jefferson is a no defense lack of killer instinct loser
