Alcoholism

Some people are genetically predisposed to becoming addicted, which from there commonly turns into a physical dependency. That can be classified as a disease.

Exactly. Genetic predilection makes you more of a target to become addicted to alcohol - you develop a chemical dependency on it. Chemical dependence is, in many ways, excruciating to "get over." Why do you think millions of smokers fail in quitting smoking each day?

most every behavior can be classified as a disease so that insurance will cover treatment

Are you chemically dependent on watching? And don't just say that "I feel sad when I don't watch" or something equivalent. Show me that you have a true, chemical dependency.

well when jazz is on no matter what time it is i need to watch. sometimes i try to go to sleep but cant.before a game lets say 2 or 3 hours before the game i fall asleep i wake up about the time the jazz start to play. and cant sleep untill i know the final score.

does that classify

Not of medicine. I know that doesn't make me an expert either. But what I do know of withdrawal symptoms is that in most cases they are far worse than sleepless nights.

so is being addicted to watching jazz basketball a disease if so. can my health insurance cover the cost of nba league pass

There is a difference between mental and physical addiction. Quitting alcohol when your an addict can have severe PHYSICAL symptoms. You being addicted to the Jazz is all in your head and much easier to overcome.

as i stated in another post.

the disease excuse. takes power away from the alcoholic. with no power over their drinking what can they do as i stated in another thread.

also if an alcoholic is powerless to this disease shouldn't dui and vehicular manslaughter/homicide not be punishable by law since its a "recognized disease" which we are powerless against.

also the only "treatment" to alcoholism is live long attendance to an aa meeting. it is free but a basket is passed for donations. hmm sounds like a cult

this gives me something to think about. . . .

how about this:

calling it a disease that can be treated makes the insurance companies billable by the pharmacies and doctors, right????

wouldn't be the first time monetary considerations entered into the equation of what professionals choose to label as a disease.

Dutchjazzing? Does that require clogs?

As a nation Denmark, it's people are pretty weak minded. Many of their UFC fighters, while great fighters, are big, big cheaters. It's in their culture. Cheating. They have no personal pride.

@dutch - we must play a game of 21 and post it on here so everyone can laugh at us...ahem.....you.

im thinking 21-0? can you score one point againt me?

My point (which spurred all this) is that some people are born with alcoholic genes "turned on" by ancestors. They are in essence making chemicals that make them want alcohol more than the average person. What Dutch "weak mind" Jazzer fails to realize is that someone with this bigger nagging force may be much stronger willed than someone who is free of the affliction, but may still succumb/relapse. Who is someone without the chemical issues to judge the frailty of another who does? Please give me the blueprints to your mind-strength meter if you can do it.

but "alcoholism is a disease" notion is a big slap in the face to people suffering from legitimate diseases

Is it because it's self inflicted?

STDs are certainly diseases, and they are also self inflicted. I'm not sure about alcoholism myself. And if alcoholism is a disease, then you have to say having a heroin addiction is a disease, a tobacco addiction, etc. I don't know if I'm ready to make the leap that addiction in and of itself is a disease.

I could see calling it an addiction...disease, not so much.

STDs are not self inflicted. They are inflicted by the other person. A reasonable person would not have relations with someone with an STD, unless she was REALLY sexy.
