Alec Burks VS. Getting swept in the 2011 Playoffs

Burks or Getting Swept by Lakers

I do know the situation, I'm attempting to half heartedly pay attention in class, therefore making myself look like an ***. O.K. disregard the top half of my post, but I still think we have a decent chance of advancing if we get above the 8 seed. So yes I want to make the playoffs and not have the pick.

I have a tough time seeing sarcasm around this forum. I apologize. I am just tired of people being adamant about something without actually knowing the information.

No worries, I agree on all counts, that was a bluesrockeresque post and I should and am embarrassed by it.

Last year was a crap shoot, we didn't have any idea what kind of team we had, of course we wanted our pick. This year is totally different we have some what of an identity and we can see real promise in all our young guys. Let's reward them for thier hard work and give then some playoff experience.

Bad comparison. Jazz ended up with the twelfth pick, not the last lotto pick.

The question because, would you rather have Marcus (not Markieff) Morris in last year's draft or make the playoffs?

That presumes that someone else would've taken Burks before 14, and from everything I looked at, Burk's was projected in the late teens and Jazz reached a little bit.

The original question also presumes we would have been swept. Nothing in sports is ever guaranteed.

Took a look at three mocks from 2011.

Burks was the choice at 8, 13, and 19. I think he would have been off the board at 14.

The Jazz could get a player like Austin Rivers, Quincy Miller, or possibly Damian Lillard at 14 in this next draft. That said, I bet we could take the Spurs to 6 games.

Hmm, I like playoffs and Alec Burks.... What was the question again?

How about if we just go back a couple of hours in time to when you thought up this post and whack you in the head? :)

Oh looky looky here. Whaaaaaaaa?

Looks like we all got a little bluesrocker in all of us huh?

Just pick yourself up off the ground and dust yourself off. You'll be ok.

How is it that only two people have voted for playoffs, but yet there are a ton of people arguing for the playoffs still?

Anyways the idea of us not needing to add some more pieces to this team before we start trying to make the playoffs is just plain dumb.

People you have to realize that Al jefferson and Paul Millsap arent going to be here regardless after next year. And possibly others won't either. A lot of things could happen from now until then. And the only guarantees will be the young four. So it would be wise to try and add a few more tools for some insurance that your are going to be good enough for several playoff pushes in the future.

If we make our leap now then that is it. If we choose to go forward from here with what we got then there is no turning back or trying to do this later.

All most of us are advocating is a proper rebuild, not a rushed one.

Generally speaking, I'd rather have another lottery pick in the 2012 draft than make the playoffs. This draft is just too deep (we could get a guy like Rivers or Marshall with the 14th pick). Plus, of The Four, Hayward is the only one that I see getting major minutes in the playoffs. Corbin is going to rely on the vets too much, imo--it'll be like the quadruple OT game when he wouldn't make a sub despite the obvious fatigue of Al and Sap. If we could be certain that the young guys would be the ones getting playoff experience, then I'd be all for it. But since they probably won't, I think a late lottery pick helps our future more than the playoffs will.

If we assumed the scenario of playoffs, we'd have to still assume Deron wasn't traded.

So Deron not traded + Sweep = no Burks
OR
Deron traded = Burks.

I'd rather have Deron traded.

I think Burks would get alot of minutes as well. He is out playing CJ hands down (who isn't). But there is also a chance of foul trouble for Paul or Al, giving way to more minutes for Favors and Kanter.

No one's advocating a perpetual tank ala the Bobcats. The Jazz are not that kind of organization and we Jazz fans have developed a taste for the postseason. But this year is a particularly special draft. This draft will be more beneficial for a not-quite-there-yet team than next year's would be. This isn't the time for stubborn ideology.

I'll be happy for the players if they make the playoffs but as a life long fan I'd prefer to miss this year's playoffs.

Playoffs all the way this year...but... Will I cut myself like I usually do if we don't make the playoffs this year? No. That's saying a lot about this draft class...

BTW, the parity in the NBA is a joke. Even with the most teams that the league has ever had, more than half the teams in the league make the playoffs. It's not only possible to make the playoffs with a losing record, recent history says to expect it. No 8-seed has won a championship, and only one 8th seed has made it past the second round (in a lockout-shortened and totally insane season). Ever. Only one 7th seed has ever made it to the finals. There are few accomplishments in sports generally more pointless and even counterproductive than getting into the playoffs in one of those seeds.

I personally hope the Jazz are very competitive but miss the playoffs by a game or through tie-breaker and then come in next year like gangbusters.

Also, I think the course of this franchise changes once the team makes the playoffs and I do not want to keep Al. I want to get the most possible for him, I don't begrudge him, I like him, and I wish him well, but I don't see how this all works out. If Big Al gets extended I'm going to be ****ing depressed.
