What's new

An appeal to the finer citizens of this forum.

How many posts get lots of dislikes? People dont often dislike posts just because they disagree. They dislike what the post is doing and usually posts with a lot of dislikes are not just a differing opinion but being rude or hurtful to someone. People are pretty open to polite posts on here that offer differing opinions. It works great on comment sections. It usually just blocks trolling posts.

I imagine if that became a form of self-moderating you would see a lot more dislikes. I don't dislike very often, I just respond or ignore if I don't feel it is worth responding to, although I don't generally use the "ignore" feature, I just simply don't respond. I think right now I literally have one poster on ignore and he doesn't really post any more anyway.

That might be true. Although I dont dislike the idea of having the board self moderate some. If a post got hidden after 5 or 10 dislikes that seems reasonable. Plus you can always just click and look at it.

For me its not really an issue. I dont have a problem with how things are. I just know that a lot of decent posters are frustrated and not posting as much. I want to encourage more activity. For me personally I dont mind less moderating.

I think dislikes would become more common if they had the power to hide posts. I post on Ars Technica, and as soon as that system was introduced, everyone suddenly had the same opinion, since minority views are more likely to get down voted. It also changed the threshold of quality for upvoting and down voting. A negative post about Trump, for example, would never get enough down votes to be censored, even if it's something like "man, Trump is terrible". The opposite will certainly be hidden unless it is meticulously argued and rigorously researched. I can't say it was an improvement.

I know it greatly improved the discussions news comment sections. The posts that got disliked enough to be hidden were just ones attacking or trolling.

This site you would easily know that if certain posters posts got hidden that it was because they were trolling. Differing opinions would not get disliked enough to hide them, and they would get some likes to counter that anyways.

Besides this board is for Jazz talk. The GD stuff is just a fun side thing. It would get crappy off topic comments hidden on the Jazz threads.

The idea that more people would dislike might happen but we do have precedence with this. Negs can cause someone to not be able to start threads. I dont think the number of negs greatly increased when people realized it did something. Maybe it did temporarily but I doubt it is much higher now per person than before.

^^ Only read the last part cause I saw my name. :D

But no really, I've seen forums where dislikes hide posts. It creates an echo chamber. It's not a good idea.

I have a good amount of rep points, so I'd like a system that favors those with high rep points. Duh.

What would be a way to reward those with high rep?

There is really no good reason for sweeping changes. Just ignore Dutch if you don't wanna read his posts. I don't want every unpopular opinion to be hidden.
Except ignore doesn't work. I have him on ignore and I see most of his posts. If he is quoted or if he quotes someone then I automatically see his posts despite having him on ignore.

I don't even see an option to dislike posts on the app.

That's an app problem (I assume). They should fix it so it works like the pc version. That's the solution to your problem, not the introduction of a second system that may or may not work on the app.

Thanks for the call out Bulletproof ... I saw it when posted and have been thinking more on this the last few days. I think I want to involve more of the rep system to combat this alongside our current process - which I still believe works well for standard report/infraction scenarios. If someone violates the rules in an obvious manner, report it and we'll address it. Unfortunately, that quite often is a GREY area and if we took everything to the letter of the law, if you will, I think a good percentage of the community would be in violation at times. So we do our best. We have a voting system among moderators to determine what action is taken from EVERY report received. We submit our own reports as well for vote, not just those all of you send.

As for those community members that attack or consistently preaching an off-topic method, please use the REP system for now. If they go negative today, they cannot start a thread. I'm looking at versions of "timeouts" or something where too many negative REPs in a certain time prevent them from posting at all, etc. I'm also looking around at other communities as to how they solve this as well. I know many have no tolerance and others ignore it. Who does it well that you've seen?

As for outright attacks or things that are likely a bigger issue than a simple infraction, we're discussing this as well. Even on reddit (credit colton) they do permanent and immediate bans for bigger offenses:

Open to all of your feedback on this as well. Thanks again.

NOTE: may move this to Site Feedback based on the discussion.

What do you think eggs on the trollish reaction? The neg happy bullies, butt hurt people, and group think narrative driving alts (you know who I'm taking about).

End those and you might end the rightist problem that everyone is crying over. Or, we can simply become adults again.

You are right, but the bolded is just too much to ask on an internet fan forum.

The big complaint right now is the right wing annoyance response to the annoying left wing overloading by a few posters with several obvious alt accounts. Jason knows this and is trying to keep the blood flowing without draining the swamp.

Who are the alts?

"I want to be kind to everyone
For that is right, you see
So I say to myself, remember this,
Kindness begins with me."

The best part about growing up Mormon is having a song available for all situations. :D

So franklin is suggesting there is a liberal with multiple alts overwhelming the discussion and that is why dutch has been the way he's been?

I know Trout told me he has an alt. He would never tell me who though. That guy is a great guy, btw. Friend for life.
