What's new

Any retired jerseys before Gobert?

A case can certainly be made for AK.
In today's world, I doubt he'd have the same nickname, but yeah, it was perfect at the time.

Yeah and AK is #2 in blocks, #4 in steals, #7 in games played, #5 in assist, #6 in points, and #7 in rebounds. Though his raw stats fell of in the 2nd half of his career, his advanced stats (which people didnt care about as much back then) were always high.

I'm not really against AK, but it just wasn't a good story there at the end. His 5x5 and his really unique skills. I said it in this thread already, but I really liked AK. He had a certain physical intelligence/genius that was so beautiful to watch. He was special AF. I almost wish the Jazz had built around him more and had never had Deron or Boozer. I don't know that the team would have had more success, but it would have been more interesting.

I think the real argument, and this isnt going to be popular, the Jazz should have probably moved on from Sloan quicker.

Nobody. I'm sure a weak case can be made for a bunch of players. Nobody stayed long enough and had been good enough to even seriously consider.

Yeah, but if the criteria for getting in is just putting up a lot of unique stats + career longevity, AK did that too.

And as to infection critique on Andre falling off in the 2nd half of his career, Eaton kind of did the same did he not?
When I say falling off, I’m not talking about his play (though his play certainly fell off). He found himself on the outs with fans and with the organization for a myriad of reasons. That’s not something that ever happened with Eaton (as you can see Eaton is still partially relevant in current Jazz culture/society even though most people never saw him play).
I will say, the more I think about it, the more I would be in favor of retiring 47.
Is your barometer for that the flack you’re catching here?
AK47 should be. I don’t see anyone wearing 47 again even if it isn’t. Such the perfect # and nickname for him
It’s an interesting dilemma. While I don’t think they’d retire it, I believe they’d prevent anyone from wearing it, partly because it’s fairly unique to just him and would be a slight. The organization has softened a bit on DWill, it seems (or maybe just us fans), but 8 is harder to have an unwritten policy on, especially as someone (forget who) wore it already a number of years ago.

I say it should be Matt Harpring, if only for his harassment in the Denver games against Carmelo Anthony. He literally owned him.

It would have been Johnson or Corbin. Phil was always pretty loyal to Sloan and I think he was going to retire when Sloan did. Ty was a highly regarded assistant. IIRC, didn't he once win an award for top NBA assistant coach? Corbin was a lock to take over (unless Sloan had retired MUCH sooner). Look how hard it was for DL to get rid of him. And ultimately, replacing Corbin with Snyder may be just as important as drafting Gobert or Mitchell.

Corbin didnt become an assistant til '04 and Johnson had no interest in head coaching.

But we could have had a nice run in the regular season with some run-and-gun offense, punctuated by an epic post-season collapse on D’Irilenko’s collective psyche.
D’Andrei?

And that's why I posted exactly what I did. Johnson had been a head coach, even won COY. He likely had opportunities to be a head coach, but was content being Sloan's assistant. In fact, he left Layden's staff to become the Kings' HC. Never know at what point he gave up his head coaching ambition. Perhaps after the Kings fired him for the 2nd time, after which he returned to the Jazz under Sloan?

And as you said, Ty became an assistant in 2004.. Had Sloan retired sooner, would the Millers have felt Ty had enough experience to be a head coach? I can't find the info on top assistant coaches - maybe I'm misremembering. But Ty was selected in 2009 to be one of five assistants at a USA basketball mini-camp. So he was pretty highly regarded.

I said this at the time, even though Jerry is one of the best, and caught flak for it. The game adapted too much and the team couldn't acquire the necessary pieces to bring success.

Jerry should've retired after that season they overachieved with a team that was predicted to win 20 games. When he retired, he still didn't believe in the 3-point shot, nor in defending it. If he had retired and the Jazz hired someone like D'Antoni, AK would've been a perennial All-Star. He was made for the run and gun style.
