Isn't the crude oil price at about a third of its high?

Well, ya. Industry performance and oil prices are not directly correlated. You can't trade in oil the same way you trade stocks. An ETF is similar to an index fund.

I know they do so on the NYSE floor and I think they owned some brokerage house or something but having seen Trading Places, I thought commodities could be bought and sold by everyday Joe's.

I strategically invest in commercial real estate (individual and REIT investments)and have averaged over 25% on my investments each year except two since 1999. My worst year I gained 4% on RE. I also buy large amount of certain IPOs each year. Mastercard and Visa were two of my large IPO investments. The key is knowing how to get in quickly before stock prices rise, which tends to happen on IPOs of major companies. And of course a lot of less risky but still aggressive mutual funds.

You can't just buy a ton of crude oil via the symbol CL on the NYMEX?

Every contract controls 1000 barrels, meaning for every $1 change you make or lose $1000. 1000:1 leverage. Risky AF.

I have a hard time buying this. REIT outperformed forever, until it didn't. Nobody didn't lose money in REIT or private assets post-2008.

So I can buy it as I mentioned? If I wanted to throw 25K into it, I would buy what is called "25 contracts" of crude oil and I would have to do so on NYMEX?

I didnt say I did not lose on REITs. My RE portfolio is a balance of private commercial investment and REITs. My REIT investments in 08 and 09 took a loss, but were offset by my private commercial RE investments which had reasonable gains considering the market climate. Due to this I concentrated more in the private side over the next couple years(2009 to 2011) which hurt a bit. The private investment gave a good return, but my REITs over that same period increased close to 170%, which was just insane. I still had a good amount in Equity REITs, but by the time I reinvested havily in REITs the market had begun to stabilize.

Wouldn't you need to be on the floor to buy commodities the way you describe?

I don't buy futures. You'll need a lot more than that unless you are lucky enough to catch the falling knife directly at the bottom. The margin call will come quickly. More likely you would buy 5 contracts with $25k to cover short term losses while praying it doesn't drop an additional $5/barrel.

@Siro, I can buy futures for $2.25/contract in my TD account.

I understood the first time.

There were some excellent traded REIT opportunities in 2008. I went into heavy research on 2 dozen and eyed BDN, FR, and was about 3 days from going GGP before Ackman took control of it and screwed my timing. 30 bagger...
