Are the Jazz Being Timid?

yvyvy2as.jpg

That is so disrespectful to Schwayze bro.

It seems to me that the Jazz name is only showing up around OJ Mayo and that looks like a long shot and big $$$$$. It seems like every other free agent the Jazz are not mentioned. I realize CP3 and Dwight aren't coming to SLC but it seems like the front office is being a tad timid.

Lol. Timid has nothing to do with it. Being a small market team and SLC has everything to do with it. Who wants to report news from good ol' Deseret?

Please, rep now.

Too much rep given in the past 24, but I'll be your bitch for once and like your post.

Oh yeah, and no homo.

I've heard the Jazz mentioned in regards to Copeland, Korver, Tinsley, Mo Williams, Millsap, Carroll, etc. I think they missed out on Thomas Robinson, but hopefully they don't miss out on other salary dumps of quality players.

I would be OK with 2 options.

1. Jazz stay away from the best free agents and sign people like Tinsley that can support the core being bult. Hand the youth the reigns and let them lead the team.

2. Jazz go strong after all the best free agents and make a real effort to build a championship contender immediately.

There is no way #2 is happening in this offseason so the Jazz should go with #1 and play the hell out of Burke, Burks, Hayward, Kanter, Gobert and Favors. Let them get comfortable with each other, let them gel. Fleece teams at the deadline with one goal in mind, 2014 draft picks. Then go after as high a pick as you can get with the assets on hand. Get that last puzzle piece (would love a shot at those SFs in 2014) and go for gold.

Favors/Gobert
Kanter/Evans
Parker/Carroll
Hayward/Burks
Burke/Neto

Sweet Lord Almighty...

Who is Parker?

Jabari Parker is a sf in the upcoming 2014 draft. He is just an example of 5-6 kids that could complete the team. I would be absolutely thrilled if the Jazz land a top 5 pick in 2014. Thrilled.

Agree with all of it.

It's not being timid. It's being genre savvy. Here's the facts.

1. The Jazz already have their starters at all five positions in B2B, Kanter, Favors, and Hayward. There is no reason to blow their wad when such would impede their ability to sign them long term. This is a supremely talented bunch on paper. They just need time and this will be the season.

2. The Jazz still have roster space to fill. They need a PG or two to spell Burke now and then. Given it will be his first season and he's transitioning from a 30 game to an 82+ game season, he needs time to "grow" into that role. They need a backup big man and another wing to eat minutes. They will get these, but they will be short term, low money contracts.

3. Look at the "Big FAs" available. Look at their egos. This is a non-starter in the 801.

4. The revamped Luxury Tax is like Greg Ostertag. You don't want to deal with it on your team unless you have to. Around mid-season, teams over the cap (and there will be many) will need to dump contracts to avoid it. The Jazz will be best positioned to eat those contracts for a price, in the form of draft picks (preferably 2014 1sts and 2nds) and good players with reasonable contracts.

Devil's Contract, thy name is Utah Jazz. Satan, thy name is Dennis Lindsey. Price, thy name is picks, TPEs, and good players.

They've played this game before to maximum effect. Only this time, the Jazz are in a MUCH better position due to the circumstances and the fact the core is already set.

Most teams in the Jazz's position would blow their wad in FA in a vain attempt to play "King of the Mountain". No, they know exactly what they are doing. The fact the Jazz bought a draft pick does indicate they are willing to go after what they want. But they aren't desperate. They're just playing the game, and they do tend to do it better than most.

This is what you do if you are Utah:

Go young, go cheap. Then, at the end of December, see where Favors, Kanter and Hayward have taken you. If you are in the playoff race, go get some good, quality vets, knowing that those three are enough to get you to the promised land with the right vets around them. If they suck, stay the course, get another great piece, add vets in the offseason, make a decision on Favors vs Kanter, etc.

Pretty simple stuff.

The worst thing the Jazz can do right now is overpay for someone that will hamper them in the future (Ostertag and AK).

Agreed, except regarding AK. At the time the Jazz signed him to that deal, Kirilenko was a highly unique player for his overall ability on both ends of the floor. Pau Gasol signed a max deal that summer as well, and Kirilenko was as shade below him offensively, but much better defensively. He was also a match-up nightmare. Long story short, Gasol dictated the market and AK got his deal as a result. To me, it seemed a no-brainer at the time.

If you can't shoot, have the offense run through you, and take over a 4th quarter, you aren't a max player. I was 100% against signing AK to that deal. The Jazz extended him when he still had a year on his deal, and he would have been a restricted FA the following summer. I said over and over again, that you don't extend him now. You don't know what he is. You see flashes, and you hope, but you don't know. They should have waited and matched. If they could have gotten AK for 3-5 million less per year, and kept Bell, they would have won a title the year they went to the WCF's. Bell would have slowed down Manu, the Jazz would have beat SA, and who know what could have happened after that.
