What's new

Are we appreciating the FO enough?

I do think it's kind of crazy that there isn't 1-2 teams out there who would still highly value Collins enough to part with at least a handful of second rounders and an expiring contract.

OKC should be all over that but I guess their team has been managed so well they don't have any such existing salary in their roster? They have a floor spacing 5 and an elite PG, the two things Collins needs to be good.

The FO has done some of the big things really well since taking charge(like the Mitchell/Gobert trades). They also have done some important things poorly - like failing to formulate and follow a well discernible plan. To me it looks like we are just floating out there... in waiting pattern for something to happen without making decisive moves(after the big ones), which resulted in having to do 2 years of those half-tank maneuvers. They have also done some mind boggling decisions on the margins - the Collins trade, especially since we picked Hendricks in the top 10 of the draft within few days of that trade. On the other hand I have actually liked a lot of the draft picks they've made and I think they have good potential.

At the end of the day, the success or failure of this FO will be determined to a huge degree by the big decisions they make. They set up the franchise well with the big trades of Mitchell and Gobert. We have tons of assets. But assets don't play. Assets need to be turned into tangible prospects/players and we are yet to see the final results of those... and it will be quite some time until we see the final results. Even with what I consider 2 suboptimal years, the Jazz are still set up really well for the future. We just need to hit and hit big on some of those many shots we have(or be successful in our "big game hunting")...
So we have just randomly floated from Dok and NAW being our best unproven prospects into having like 9 equal or more promising young guys (not even counting Lauri or Sexton).

Lol.

That's what happens when you trade 2 stars for picks and young players. First you get worse(better picks and young players), second you get additional picks(more young players), third you get some young players in those trades themselves. It would be shocking if you trade 2 star players and 2 years later you don't have a bunch of promising young players.

Pretty much everything we have as promising young players is a product of those 2 trades, which I've said multiple times I loved at the time and I still love.

Huh I disagree. I feel like sips main thing has always been wanting the young talent to get minutes

Sometimes people just make head scratching posts. Pretty soon people will start saying that I didn't like this draft when I was pretty much the only person saying it was a deep draft.

They haven’t been tanking, they’re just bad and unlucky.
I don't see much of a difference between tanking and being bad.

As far as unlucky, yeah, that's the whole point of a lottery system, which is another reason tanking is dumb.

I wanted a full and shameless tank for the best possible odds at VW, was kind of ok, not high on 2023 Jazz draft picks, and didn't feel enthusiatstic about 3 picks in what was broadly seen as a weak draft.
I'm already at peace with the 2022-23 no-tank/tank, good enough with the fact that Key can play ball, Taylor showed high flashes, and Sense8 can score and be a haughy, overconfident dude. and I like 2024 draft results without wasting a sigle additional asset.
OK, I'm good now with front office, I can man up and swallow it.

I'm fine with what they've done as long as we extend and keep Lauri. Still not happy about Simone, but I have hopes for Procida.

The more I think about it, the more I think that we’re not going to be all that good this year. There’ll be lots of play time for the young-un’s and whether Lauri plays or not, will be hard to win. And hopefully this sets us up for a good spot in the 25 draft…. We have a lot of potential without going scorched earth so I think the FO has done pretty good.
