You need a three year contract to get Bird rights, I believe. So anything less than that will just be a rental.

I don't want Bird rights on Rudy Gay. Rather focus on a young guy with potential. Maybe a 2 year deal with a team option for a 3rd. Somebody where $8.4 million is a slight overpay. Either that, or two guys at about $4 million and split it up.

I'm thinking we sign Gay for a few seasons.
I don't know who else would be able to sign him - maybe DL is driving up the price for Miami's Johnson so we can get Gay. As much as they would love to, Miami can't get Gay if they have Johnson. If Gay signs with us and plays well it will be a steal and all free agent signings will be judged with: "Yeah, he's a good player, but would signing him bring us Gay value?"
Plus I think Gay and Joe Johnson would play well and would lead fast breaks. I would expect a Gay-Johnson hook-up to be on the regular. Maybe not as exciting and Steve Francis and Mobley but still epic.

Also worth considering if Gay Love would work on a team with a rim protector like Rudy. Not to sound like a jerk off but it could just end up sucking real hard.

To promote jersey sales around the world, we could sell his jersey in a rainbow color pattern.
Although sometimes limp, Gay scores a lot when healthy. If the price is right DL should pay him to take it to the hole.
He is a long bodied SF who is probably best moving to the 4, especially after his injury. Pre-injury he would be the perfect fit for the team, Hayward or no Hayward. If we get him I will be cautiously optimistic. If we can get him on a 3 year deal with a team option in year 3, that would be great.
1st year would probably be rough, and it could help a stealth tank, but maybe by his 2nd year he has gotten comfortable with his new body and can contribute to a team ready to rapidly improve.
