Before I started doing my own research, I figured I'd ask some of you what your sentiments on the issue are.

To the Turks on Jazzfanz: it seems like Western media largely holds the opinion that the Turkish government denies all existence of this occurrence despite what is characterized by Western media outlets as enormous amounts of evidence indicated the contrary.

Is it just one of those things where both sides weren't fans of each other, but then Turkey took the war-crimes to an entirely higher level? Just curious.

The origin of the term genocide and its codification in international law have their roots in the mass murder of Armenians. Lawyer Raphael Lemkin, the coiner of the word and its later champion at the United Nations, repeatedly stated that early exposure to newspaper stories about Ottoman crimes against Armenians was key to his beliefs about the need for legal protection of groups. (In 1948, in part due to the tireless efforts of Lemkin, the UN approved the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.)

If you inspire the term then the term probably fits.(some of the inspiration to be fair, the Nazis definitely were the main inspiration)

I don't know a ton about it. I would tend to agree with Salty13 that if the boot fits...

Also, how crazy is it that these people were just completely wiped out? Between Germany, Turkey, and China, the high end estimates of genocide is like 30 million people killed. Those people would have had a very significant amount of progeny. How many geniuses and world changers did we miss out on because some assholes decided they should kill people they didn't like?

Apparently if you ask Germans their genocide never happened either. We had a German exchange student and we got to that part of world history and she blatantly said it never happened and when they brought out a Nazi flag she freaked and left the room.

this goes against the hundreds of Germans that I've met (I've also lived there twice).

From what I understand the Turks weren't the only ones behind it. The Kurds had a significant role as well.

Back then the concept of natural territory was prevelant. Even American president Woodrow Wilson advocated for that in his guidelines for peace after WWI. Meaning, if your neighbor owned land who he as historically or ethnically yours, you had the right to take it. Hence one of the greatest reasons why no one bothered hitlers' annexation of Austria, the Czech, and the Rhineland.

Armenians owned land that the Turks felt was theirs. Americans did this as well. Just as Andrew Jackson and natives who once lived in Georgia or Florida.

By the time this final pogrom happened, the Ottoman Empire was on its death bed. This was one last effort to restore order, control, and take land and wealth away from those who were deemed as enemies of the government. In many societies of decline, the majority will find a minority as a scapegoat. Much like in the modern USA today. We blame Mexicans and food stamp people for all of our ills while ignore the tax cuts, corporate handouts, and terrible wars we started in the Middle East.

"look at our debt!!! We need to stop spending! We need to deport all the illegals! Cut welfare and food stamps! Make America great again by building a wall!"

Yet how often do we talk about the unbelievably low tax rates and terrible wars that we are still paying dearly for?

Btw, I laugh when idiots like Rand Paul suggest we arm the Kurds. As if they can be trusted with American weapons? Why, so they can wreck havoc in a few years on the Turks, Shia, Sunnis, Jews, and Armenians?

@The Thriller Good job teacher, I like your posts.

I'm a Turk but I'm gonna say the thing you prolly wanna hear the least. Then you can start attacking my false claims because I am a barbaric genociding Turk. Armenians were called a minority in those times. God damn politics. Naming people and ****. They were called common folk, like the Kurds of the area, before all the nationalism era hit the stage. Everyone cared for their own biz. No one killed no one because they are Muslim or non Muslim. Then some international strategic political stuff happened which included UK's and Russia's manipulation over Armenian population and all of a sudden, Armenians were starving to form their own country and state in East Anatolia. As Thriller said, Kurds were not fond of any of that, even though they were to folllow in the means of "Hey man we are a separate nation, let's bail on Turks and form our own" motto. By that time the Emprire was mainly ruled by a soldier-bureaucrat party and they were socialized and trained in parts of Europe in which they all experienced the Western thoughts of the era. That was led by nationalism. United Nation notion. So when Armenians formed their gangs, the government tried pressuring it, and it became a **** throwing battle after some point just like it is in most situations like Kurds and Turks today. You know it's really stupid to even say it, these people are not one race, they are all mixed, **** I wouldn't even tell the difference between an Armenian and a Turk they are all hairy dudes with beer bellies.

But when the forced immigration of the Armenians started, the militia started hitting the soldiers of the Empire. So it went worse. Terrible conditions, terrible events, ****ed up psychologies, countless tragedies. Since then the Armenians always had done a good job in lobbying and making sure every country sees the history as they tell them. Turkey doesn't give enough effort to change it so they are the ones to blame. Our historians just say "C'mon let's clash our sources!" but nothing happens.

I seriously hate the issue. I know that a lot of generations in Armenians descent learn to hate us. And I feel terrible for it. I wish there was a chance to wipe everyhing away and judge each other for not being Turkish or Armeanian, but as human beings, our deeds.

Above everything, it sucks that people still find interest in protecting their own sides with words of propaganda as they step over the shivering bones of the dead that had gone through unimaginable tragedies.

If I had the chance, I would grab Turkey and Armenia by the neck and toss the heads and tell them there are more important things to care about. And then I'd tell them to commit genocide on the British. .... kidding :P
