What's new

At this point, what is your OPINION

My biggest concern was seeing him let undeserving players whine their way into the line up. I want a coach with some testes.

This is Corbin's year to be fairly judged. As was pointed out, last year was difficult with no training camp and the final months of 10-11 should not be held against him. If Favors is still getting 20 minutes a game and sitting in the 4th quarter while Pal Jeffersap is out there avoiding the free throw line, not boxing out for rebounds, and opening the lane for easy baskets, then I'll be calling for Corbin's head.

This.

He played Howard too much, but did send Raja to no mans land.
He kept the stupid headband rule, but did change where we try to force people on defense.
He didn't play Favors enough, but he did put Miles in his place.

Let's see what he can do with the camp, and a full year. It's still wait, and see mode.

I agree that we don't really know who Corbin is as a coach yet. However, he's had a long time to figure out what he wants to do with this team and this year there is no excuse not to put that vision on the court. So, that said, once this season gets into full-swing I think we'll know what we have in our head coach.

I like all of this. We all know he's not getting fired during this season anyways so there isn't much point in going into the season prejudiced. He got a lot of heat over rotations but some of that was a function of guys getting hurt right when they started to get a stride going. (Raja & Howard in particular.) The team was also immensely disadvantaged the first couple months with Harris not really wanting to play basketball.

Putting it all together the playoff series was disappointing and he obviously was out coached, and there were other points that are easily questionable, but Corbs took a team that had serious roster flaws coming off a nuclear meltdown season with almost zero preparation, and coached those guys into the postseason. IMO that accomplishment is very significant and speaks to his ability to lead.

I'd add that assuming the offense is going to stay basically the same, this year's roster is built pretty much to a T to succeed with it. I very much like that the FO and Coach are working in the same direction even if that isn't the direction I preferred in April.

Finally, I love the mustache. Sexeh.

This season will be deciding for Corbin. He overachieved last year by making playoffs and anything less would be considered a failure. Problem is our opponents in Western conference got stronger while we kind of stayed about the same. I know on paper Jazz made changes to improve their defense and perimeter shooting but until I see that in games I am not buying it yet. I just have this bad feeling about this season... I think we will miss playoffs and it will be the end for Corbin.

"Try not to be a homer nor a mouth-breathing critic .. just your true gut feel."
My gut feeling is that he's going to do a good job, and I'll tell you why. I remember when he was playing. He was an excellent defender, unselfish, and always gave his best. I remember often wondering why he didn't start, and then Minny got him in the expansion draft. He proved to be a rock solid player as a starter. He was, without doubt, one of the most under appreciated players of his day. Yet he still went out and did his best. He didn't run his mouth or complain. He was, and is, a true professional.
I don't see him being a different person now that he is a head coach. The Jazz players will see him for his good character and respect him. Mr Corbin did a good job last season, and I expect him to only do better with each coming season. Jazz fans are fortunate to have such a quality person as their head coach. In the end, he will do what is best for the Jazz to win, and the team will respond accordingly.
Best of luck to the Jazz this season, with the exception of their games against Memphis.

Everyone basically summed up my feelings. It's too early to tell what we really have. But for the moment, it seems like we have a B coach who is afraid to take the risks that take a team to another level.

What I want to see from him this year:

-get his guys to commit more to defense
-more playing time for Favors and Burks (hopefully Kanter too, but that's a little more difficult)
-run the offense through the wings more...or just anything other than "put the ball in the black hole and hope it comes out where we want"
-take some risks! Play the big lineup more. Experiment with Burks and Foye at PG. Actually run some plays for Hayward.

Those are the basics.

First season was garbage, but that's to be expected.

Second year he made a lot of rookie mistakes, but he still never had a proper training camp. He still has some messed up rotations, but I'm sure he's learning along the way. Overall, I feel like he did a lot better than a lot of people were expecting. He totally got his players to buy his system, and earned their respect, which doesn't happen very often with rookie coaches. He's already a better coach than the likes of Mark Jackson, Keith Smart, etc. If he can get his rotations down, I think he'll be an excellent coach.

This is the make or break year for him. If he doesn't clean up his rookie coach mistakes this year, he's going to get a lot of hate from me.

I'll say this though. I think the young players like him, which is really good. I remember D-Will saying he got along with him better than Sloan (duh) and just felt he was easier to talk to and such. So, he seems good at working with the players, developing some sort of relationship with them and making them feel wanted (except Braille...which is a plus).

Lukewarm.

He almost always arrived at the right conclusion, but he almost always arrived at it late. I'm not sure he has the communication skills or the balls to be the leader you need from an elite coach, and I'm afraid this organization will need a truly elite coach in no uncertain terms to have a chance at a title given all of the innate disadvantages to being in Utah.

My gut feeling is that it's not that he's a good enough coach to not be fired. It's that he has good enough talent and a great enough homecourt advantage to get good enough wins to make him appear good enough...and not get fired.

In a seemingly improved Western conference, us included, we'll see just how good he is. If we regress, despite our additions and expected improvement in youth, he needs to go and we need to pursue Thibs (if he's not re-signed), JVG or SVG. It's that simple. This window for our youth and their development is huge.

If we are continually dependent on an entry pass into the low-left block, and our shooters are asked to jack it with 3 seconds left on the shot clock from wherever they happened to catch a rushed pass (rather than a preferred spot), then I'm guessing we won't be that happy with the brand of basketball the Jazz are playing.

You're just trying to argue without arguing. The jazz need MORE OFFENSE. By "more offense," I mean more wrinkles and faster decision making. You know, "jazz basketball.""

Maybe you can start with some plays you would like Corbin to infuse into his offense & we can discuss what would be necessary from the players to get it done.

i think the communication still thing is overblown. look around the league, and most of the time it's the assistant coaches who are actually talking to players to prepare them for a game. pop and phil don't send a team memo out on gameday to outline the exact minute distribution.

to me, ty's biggest mistake was that the miller basically told him, in front of the media, that he had permission to screw around for a couple years, and he STILL went with the comfort zone choices. they told him he didn't have to look over his shoulder, which basically is the same as telling him "go for broke; these young guys could turn into stars and make you look like a genius, and even if they don't, we're not holding this transition period against you until the second or third full season." he has a no-risk grace period and he blew it by playing raja bell and josh howard.

still, the guy has a near-.500 record after a season and a half, and most brand new coaches don't do that well out of the gate. if we grade his first 28 games on a curve because he was asked to captain the hindenberg when it was already halfway to the ground, we have a guy who appears to have figured out how to get it together pretty quickly.

He's made good work with what he's been given. I am worried that he will be too much of a "vet first" guy which is one thing that I didn't like about Sloan. If Foye is logging too many unproductive minutes this upcoming year, I am going to be a little concerned.

I'm in the camp of not judging until this year. Way to many things completely out of the norm in the last to years that even great coaches would have a hard time dealing with. I feel that he handled things pretty well considering the position he was put in. But that he made a lot of mistake that I need to see him fix this year now that he well have a normal season and prep to work with.

So my opinion is that I am holding judgement for now. But am only lukewarm when it comes to Corbin as our coach at this minute
