Bad NBA Contracts for Assets Explained

Ellis - “Now that the cap isn’t going to grow – it’s essentially going to be flat – you’re going to see financially-based trades. So teams that have flexibility in their cap are going to be in great position to take advantage.”

If its not to our advantage, we wont do it. Its that simple. But we are one of those teams with flexibility.

I would absolutely love to sign a "3rd star" in 2019. But you know what, so is half the league. We arent a free agent star destination. Half the league is in the luxury for 2018-19. Half. If we can take advantage of that before the deadline, we would be brilliant. We would be opportunistic.

We can be a free agent spot if we win and have good players to pair up. If we have a Star in Mitchell and a all NBA center who plays elite defense and are winning other people will want to play with them. Players care about multiple things with destination. One of them is the actual location, Utah isn't high on that list for most players except a few like Lillard. But many many more care about winning (type of player we want) and money something we can offer.

What hole doucheZilla? Why don't you read the articles and do the math. We are a team that can benefit from other teams' poor finances. Please go back under your rock when the Jazz make a deal using one of our expirings.

Ron - on what world do you think we will win enough the next 18 months to warrant enough wins to lure free agents?

Everybody wants to let Joe and Favors expire. How do we replace their production? We go into next year with Exum 100% and a late lottery pick and we are all the sudden a "winner". How?

The reality is this - we are on a path to lose Favors and Joe for nothing. We will reinvest our money into re-signing Hood and Exum. We will draft in the late lottery. After 2018-19, we have one max contract of space but a team that has maybe made the 2019 playoffs barely. Who do we overpay at that point? What 3rd tier overpay free agent do we target?

Propose an idea gomretat. Otherwise just go away

80-90% % of the trade suggestions on this board make zero sense at all and I have no interest in being part of that. And it seems to me that your desire is simply to prove you are smarter than others who post here and/or you have a real need to keep a thread alive. So be it. The real good news is that DL and his team know more about what makes sense and what is doable then anyone on here and they are making decisions with both short term and long term needs in mind. There are definitely times when letting people walk after a contract expires makes a lot more sense then bringing on more salary. I trust them to figure that out. Go Jazz. Now, as you wish, I will go away.

Is it a general consensus on this board that people are prepared to take on Mahinmi's bad contract?

Lopo couldnt get his fix arguing w/ me over trades cuz I pledged off it so he started this thread smh.

Seriously starting to think Saint Cry is Donald Trump. Can someone verify he's not? Could Trump have enough time for golf and JFC?

Cy, I dont waste time worrying about you. You plead for us to believe in a Gordon deal then take low blows to other ideas.

Back to topic - I only want to take a bad contract if we get a great asset in return. I want Orlando's 1st or many picks from Houston or many picks from Washington or Parker from the Bucks etc.

I think it's time to consider taking a bad contract if it means getting multiple firsts or one really good asset. Who is worth pursuing (contracts do not include this year):

Mahinmi 2 more years $31.5 million

Ryan Anderson 2 more years $42 million

Noah 2 more years $38 million

Asik 2 more years $23 million

John Henson 2 more years $21 million

Dellevadova 2 more years $19.5 million

Deng 2 more years $37 million

Marvin Williams 2 more years $29 million

This one. We can still make the playoffs this year if we can get healthy. If not we can definitely make it next year. Pretty simple. Gobert and Mitchell are high level players and can get you to the playoffs. Players will want to play with them.

Unless you dont think they are good enough to build.

Win enough. Barely making the playoffs is not winning enough to lure some big free agent.

I think people will want to play with those guys, but there is no guarantee that we can get somebody when so many other teams will have money in 2019.

And to add to this, the Jazz organization clearly has a good rep around the league. I mean, it's really the whole reason we have Donovan in the first place. If you go back and watch his post-workout interview, someone asked him point blank why he was even there, seeing as he was projected way out of the Jazz's range. The answer came down to the fact that his agent steered him towards the Jazz because of the quality of the organization.

Rudy + Donovan + stable organization with great coach and management = pretty desirable landing spot.

I think that cap space two years from now is going to prove much more valuable than a late 1st round draft pick.

Yes, making the playoffs is enough to lure a free agent if you have two really good player already and a good coach. But I dont believe we are barely a playoff team when healthy.

There is not guarantee of anything, that is not a reason not to try. There is not guarantee an NBA draft pick can work out. There is not guarantee any player will be the same the next season or healthy.

I would trade Favors, JoeJ and Hood for Biyombo, Simmons and their 1st and not feel bad. Honestly, its a brilliant plan for our future.

Orlando has the third worst record in the league. I’d imagine they’d hold on to that pick.
