Basketball Rule Question

So I was at the gym and there was a pretty heated argument about double dribbling and the opinion on the rule was pretty much split 50/50.

If a player receives a poor pass or doesn't handle a rebound properly, causing the ball to hit the ground, can the player regain possession and dribble the ball?

I'm pretty sure you can because I swear I see it happen in the NBA all the time, but not 100% certain. Anyone here more knowledgeable on rules know?

Yes, you can. Whoever said no are morons.

Exact scenario that happened: I was doing a back door cut and the pass came well behind me. I stopped my momentum and reached backwards just to keep the ball in play. Immediately after I was able to regain possession. I pump faked and took 1 dribble for a layup. Someone called double.

That's not a double dribble. At all. The person who said so is dumb. You touched the ball. That's not the same as having possession. You therefore didn't have possession until you, as you put it, "regained possession" though in actuality it is the first time you had possession.
