Beastie Boys - Ricky's Theme

One of my musical regrets is that I didn't listen to Paul's Boutique for the first time until about 5 years after it came out. I feel cheated out of five years of an amazing album.
 
When the Beasties hit it big back in the 80s, they looked like a bunch of rich kid rap star wannabes.

Turns out they were quite visionary and highly influential. Sometimes at night I close my eyes, put on the headphones and immerse myself in Paul's Boutique. Very therapeutic. I have seen the BB live only a couple of times, but they were some of the best shows I've ever been to.

Adam Yauch was, by all accounts, a wonderful person and a relentless advocate of Tibetan independence.

He will be missed.


Edit: Interesting that YB also mentioned Paul's Boutique. He posted while I was typing, and I didn't see that until mine posted. I agree with him.

Paul's Boutique is one of the top 3 Hip-Hop albums of all time. No doubt.
 
No one knew what to make of Paul's Boutique. Everyone was waiting for Licensed to Ill Part II and instead they got a masterpiece. Ironic, because such a quantum leap in quality ended up confusing and alienating most of their fan base; which at the end of the day might have been the plan all along being their fan base was made up mostly of jocks and frat boys at the time.

Don't feel bad if you missed out on it - that record didn't sell anywhere outside of NYC.
 
My first truck was an '87 Toyota Pickup and my brother in law loaned me his garage to work on it (I bought it for $500). I wasn't ever really mechanically inclined but learned my way around a truck all while listening to a massive playlist of Beastie Boys. I later sold the same truck for $2800. Felt good
 
Damn, horrible news. One of my favorite groups of all time. Glad I got to see them at Red Rocks 3 years ago...

The last track (well, it's more like 8 tracks in one) of that album is just amazing. Like possibly the greatest hip hop song ever wrote, though admittedly I don't like hip hop very much.

Agreed. Amazing. The Johnny Cash sample in the middle is worth the price of admission almost by itself.
 
I guess I'm the only one who's gag reflex actually goes into overdrive when a BB song comes on the radio? I H8 that group.
