When I was 15 I got picked up for setting off some pipe bombs. We reloaded our own ammo and had plenty of the fixings. When a friend got a hold of some heavy duty fuse, we went and rounded up some old pipe from our dad's garages and sheds and such. Had some 1/2" brass pipe that we cut into 2-4 inch chunks, filled 3/4 of the way with smokeless and sealed off the ends best we could. My friend had a tap and we screwed on end-caps of some kind. Anyway, of the about dozen or so we tested, down by the train tracks and river in Riverdale near Riverdale Road, 3 of the littler ones went off for real. We stuck them in the mud and lit them off and it blew a hole maybe 3-4 feet around or so and sprayed water way up in the air. Sounded like about 3 M-80s going off at once. We found out if we shook them to loosen up the powder they went off much more reliably, but really it was the seal. Those must have been the only ones we sealed off well, as the others all sputtered out or blew the ends off or shot fire out of the hole the fuse was in. We were out of range and no one got hurt, but someone heard the first one and called the police. The police showed up right as #3 went off. We ran when we saw them but they caught my friend and he turned us all in. Punishment? Slap on the wrist and called our parents. I think I was grounded for 3 months, took away my Commodore 64 and everything. That's it. Things are way different now that kids have gone to schools chucking pipe bombs around.
