What's new

Beginning of a new era? Not the one you are thinking of

And they have been for 10 years, should be nothing new to us. Lots of shake up, lots of new players, same old story. I was hoping for a change, but I didn't want them to blow the team up and go back to 2004 all over again. I am along for the ride wherever it may go, but I still wish it hadn't gone this route. Sigh.

Way to over react this isn't 2004 with a scrub pg and Ak as are best offensive player. Harris is a good player Favors could turn out to be a stud, don't forget Big Al, Paul Millsap,Cj Miles, Gordon Heyward, and 2 or 3 lottery picks over this year and next. It's not like there is no talent on this team like in 04. We have lots of players to build around, in two years we will be contenders again.

As much as it stings right now to know that we lost our franchise player, we got a lot back in return. I personally believe if we would have waited until next year, we would have gotten more offers, but none as good as this one. I like this deal a LOT more than what Denver got.

Right now it may be hard to feel a connection to this Jazz team, but given time, things will feel better. Harris is a quality point guard. We have Favors, the best big man prospect in the game. I'm very excited to follow him and watch him develop. We have 2 picks that have a chance to be good, or atleast be used as trade chips for another piece.

What we had was not working. Everyone was complaining about us NOT making moves and how this team was sooo predictable and a second round exit at best. People were asking for change to bring some excitement to this team. Now we have it. I think if anything, this trade shows that we are NOT satisfied with the status quo and a first round exit every year. Resigning Boozer would have been a HUGE mistake. Letting Matthews go was a mistake on our part, but who could have known he would turn into such a good player this year? Seriously though, if we would have kept Dwill, what would have been our next move to convince him to stay? Trade AK's contract? Trade Millsap? None of that would have gotten us much closer to being a contender and keeping Dwill.

As we were, our team was stuck in mediocrity. Everyone here realized that. Our team was boring, predictable, people were asking for change. Dwill needed another legit SUPERSTAR to win a championship. We did not have a chance to get one. By trading now, we have sped up the rebuilding process by atleast a year. Don't get me wrong, I am sad Dwill had to go and will miss him a ton. He is my favorite player and I hope he finds success. He deserves it. But overall, I think this is a move that had to be made.

"Just bought a Coke and a donut at the gas station. Guys behind the counter stoked about Favors and Harris coming to the Jazz. I'm a 45 year old guy and I say 'stoked'. Going for an inspirational bike ride. I need it. My gut feeling is that the Jazz fans are all stoked. Maybe I'll see another stoked gas station clerk."

I'll say this for Mr. Miller, he's the only guy you'll see with that haircut outside of a 1989 sixth grade class picture.

And, as addendum: just remember, they made this move with Williams right in front of a major shakeup in the CBA, with Williams still having a year on his contract.

****ing brilliant.

A year that could be lost to a lockout, or more likely, trying to get Deron to agree to a trade to wherever he wanted to play after he left Utah.

Ever think that was part of the reason they did this trade? By trading Deron, the Jazz save money this year and potentially the next two years (if Deron exercises his option year) when the salary cap is expected to go down and it will likely be harder (higher luxury tax?) to exceed the cap.

Also, hasn't the point been made on this forum that teams can't win in the NBA with a PG with a max contract?

I tend to agree. If LHM were still alive, Jerry and Deron would still be here.
Maybe. The situation was obviuosly pretty bad with Deron/Jerry. I think Jerry drew a line in the sand and Greg and KOC said "maybe." It appears they had explored trading Deron earlier. But nothing definite. Certainly not like Arroyo or Giricek when Sloan got 100% support from Larry.

I loved Larry's passion. But his heart sometime got in the way. AK should have been traded long ago. Now they'll get nothing for his expiring. Larry probably would have kept Deron around, only to see him probably walk away in 2012.

I've criticized Greg in the past, maybe moreso than anyone on this board. But I commend him and KOC for taking a HUGE gamble. Keeping Deron would have been the safe move. They parlayed his deal into essentially 4 first rounders. I think we really undervalue Devin Harris. He was a helluva good player in Dallas. Still an effective one in Jersey. But losing has to take it's toll. Utah still has more assets to work with than NJ. Let's see if this change will be positive for him.

SCENE: Jazz locker room. Players and coaches both are quiet, processing the events of the past 2 weeks. Gordon Hayward in particular appears as shaken-up as a PFC on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

Ty Corbin stands up and addresses the group:

TC: "I know that it's been really tough. Thanks for sticking with it. I've asked Kevin O'Connor to come in and talk to us about what has transpired."

Kevin O'Connor strides into the room, stops in front of the white board, and looks each player in the eye. He stays silent for a very long time.

Unable to take the discomfort, Memo finally musters the strength to prop himself up on his crutches:

MO: "Kevin, what is to happen before the trade deadline?"

KOC: "To be honest Memo, I don't think anybody cares about what happens to you before the trade deadline."

Memo sits down.

KOC: "I wanted to come in this morning and talk to you about a few things. I follow Twitter, CJ. You are retarded. People don't care when you get up or go work out. And frankly, you seem to laugh out loud at the stupidest things. The only thing I laugh out loud at is the size of your can this season. I got a tweet for you: U FAT. LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

"Now on to my second point. Some of you may have noticed that we traded Deron yesterday to the Nets. New Jersey is clear on the other side of the country so I'll fill you in on how they've been doing this year. They suck. The only thing they have going is that Kim Kardashian is going to their games. She and about 600 other people. They are the 6th worst team in the league and I just sent our best player--by far--there. Where will I send you today, Andrei? Minnesota? You can take the rest of Kosta's Star Wars action figures to him. CJ, I will send you to Philadelphia for a set of dentures that I have to extract personally with my own mouth from a grandmother.

"Don't F with us, young men. How bad do you think Deron hates Utah and Coach Sloan now?

"Do you think that Larry Miller is going to walk through those doors and smooth things out? Larry's dead.

"It's a new era, bitches."

For all you know, they might have a concept of franchise tag in NBA next year, like they do in NFL. And Deron is under contract for year and a half. There really was no urgency here at all. There was still time to actually try to get Deron help rather than destroying the team.

Most likely, but he's a troll with a schtick to beat (ex: they let Boozer walk). You're not getting meaningful conversation from 2814. Better to ignore and pay attention to sincere posters.

I think a lot of good points have been made. I believe that at the heart of the issue is poor management of the roster, team and finances. There were a lot of bonehead decisions made that lead up to this point.

AK huge contract and not trading it.
Letting Matthews, Korver and Boozer walk without using them as trade bait to improve team.

If the Jazz traded DW because they couldn't re-sign him why not trade Boozer and see what they could get. Maybe they still only get AJ but I doubt they would have had to give up 2 first rounders.

It is obvious that the front office didn't learn from letting Millsap test the market because they repeated the mistake and ended up losing Matthews. Then they turn around and extend Okur for really no reason.

The Okur move and Millsap contract made Boozer a goner so if the Jazz had already made it financially impossible why not trade Boozer or AK. Instead they hold onto AK and end up losing several key players on the team.

I find it funny how many posters including me complain about the roster moves and how management is screwing things up but when DW complained many crucified him. I think DW frustrations began with his rookie benching and with the imcompetence of the front office. So I really blame the front office for the state of the Jazz.

However, I am first and foremost a Jazz fan so I will still follow the team and I am interested in seeing the direction the team takes. My only concern is if it takes four years will the front office have integrity to pay all these young guys to keep them together or will the new additions pan out and bring a winner to Utah. I have been a fan for over 30 years now so I think I will stick around.

I think the owners will push for a franchise tag like the NFL. That will make keeping star players a lot easier for the owners, and make the players a lot of money.

Listening to Rigby on kfan yesterday, I understand where they are coming from. "If the NBA is going to shorter contracts then the best the Jazz can do is build through the draft and hope to get the most competitive team they can."

I think the Jazz still need to fill a need at SG. Hopefully, we get one in the draft or sign a free agent.

If you look at the most pathetic teams in the history of NBA (who suck now too), they have more talented young building blocks than we do. Why are we better than even Clips or Warriors? We don't even have caliber of players that they have in Ellis, Griffin, Gordan. And speaking of LA, they are actually trying to improve. Just dumped useless Baron Davis for Mo Williams. Now, we should have been be the ones making moves like that. Instead we are now probably one of the least talented teams in the West.

What you don't realize is that we were just a few pieces away last summer. If had just kept the core (or even Booz for Al swap is all right, although we got really lucky here, since we lost Booz for nothing and were fortunate to gain Al) of Deron, Wes, Paul, Hayward, Millsap, and then try to improve the team using other pieces (like expiring contract of Okur next year, or AK this year, or maybe Millsap and Hayward for a better PF), we would be light years ahead of where we are today, and would be contending in a a couple of years.

But if you think we will be contenders in a couple of years after losing Deron, you are simply dillusional. We are yet to catch up with Clips and Warriors on talent. We have numerous years to go to even get to where we were last summer - if we can ever get there.
