From the German perspective...(I don't watch synchronized translated versions)
Suits - A lot of gr8 Basketball puns. "Speeddial 23" comes to mind first. It's about a lawyer and his associate whose asset is his smart mind, but lacks a university degree. Characters are very human for a drama/com on a psychological level. Prolly my fav atm! New season just begun too!
Shameless - Story about a big low educated Chicago located family and their friends. Lots of lead characters/POVs, no human archetypes, but some of the most realistic character drawings I've ever seen on TV. Can be funny and sad at the same time. Simply like life. Just a little exaggerated in regard to "how high are the odds"
Justified - KENTUCKY located drama/crime/comedy show that tells the story about a cop whose duty got shifted back to his hometown after not being able to fit into Miami with his working methods. Very entertaining, sometimes a little bit too much. And I love the accent. Give it a shot, if the first 2 shows are getting you hooked, the rest will as well.
The League - SitCom about a fantasy football league and its competitors. Allegedly partly improvised. It's like a neverending bar evening with your best friends mocking each other and telling about the obstacles of their social lives.
Boardwalk Empire - Playing post WW1 it shows the guys that ran Atlantic City back then. A local politician who controls the business in town. His protege/half fosterchild, who just returned from the war and now longs to strengthen his position and gain power but has to collide with the boss after refusing to be patient and taking short cuts. An undervalued woman not content with the position of woman in the society but then turned into a price for a rich man as well. Whenever I thought about quitting to watch the show, cause its strange at times, the show bounced back and got me hooked again. The strange feeling results from the scenery, and me living in a different century. But sometimes when I'm hanging with my grandma I recognise some habits shown in the show with her. So I guess it's the change of society which causes that. Very good dialogues and camerawork. The director is Martin Scorsese, whose screenwork I think are very "real".
Californication is also worth a look,if you're into surreal character presentation that reminds you a little bit about that crazy girlfriend you had back then

But for me it works. Its characters are changing on a show by show basis and you're in constant switch to feel sympathy, disgust, pity and other emotions for them. Plus it contains some of the best boobs and booty outside of porn. Really fun show. After the first (3 if I remember correctly) seasons quality dips a bit as it's becoming redundant. Well the story, not the boobs !
And the expired long time classic award goes to "The Wire". Classic show, real good character drawings with few exceptions. Totally getts you hooked. Awesome screen work choosing sceneries and characters. It's about the main characters running the "projects" in Baltimore and the cops trying to bust their illegal operations.
