Best solutions to the pg issues

We all agree that the jazz need a pg that can pass the ball and run the offense. Then added benefits would be shooting and or getting to the rim. Now we also have to take into the account of teams actually trading player or being able to pick up via FA or drafted and turning into the player we need. Let's take a look at what is possible.

Start with a trade I come up with 2 players that would fit the mold of being able to trade for with out sacrificing to much to get them.

Jose Calderon - good shooter great passer. Toronto is not winning with him and will probably be gone next year when his contract is up. 30 yrs old but could get us 4 to 5 good years at least if not more. Not sure what Toronto would want but a switch of Harris and a draft pick would do it. They need to rebuild.

Dj Augustin - IMHO would be the best solution to our needs. His name has come up in trade rumors for a while. He puts up good numbers for a bad team. Charlotte has some bad contracts they would like to dump and we could take them on to get him. Harris and miles for maggette and Augustin would save them a lot of money.

Fa list doesn't have many gems

Kirk kinrich - I have liked for a while and would be a good fit in our system. Not sure how many years he has left

Dj Augustin - see above would rather trade and own his rights.

Ramon sessions - not the best option but would be batter then Harris. He could also be traded for but fa might be a better option.

Draft see the many topics on this but I would like to take a flyer on a player in the second round like machado.

If I had my pick it would be Augustin.

Good point.

Also,
It is clear to me that a team can find a good future PG with a mid-level pick.
I would not trade the youth of this team now in a panic to find a PG.
Focus on developing the skills of the current players, and adding more to them , not trading them away.

There are players on this current squad with potential to improve their scoring.

This. This is why I'm tired of defending the notion that we can't have an entire team of bad shooters. The solution? To get a non-shooting PG to pass to our bad shooters. Exhausting.

Get some targets for him to pass to

Let's say the jazz do make a trade for Calderon then in the draft you could nab miller and rivers now you have inside and out.

Calderon, Watson, rivers
Bell, burks rivers
Watson, miller
Millsap, kanter
Jefferson, favors

How is that not targets.

Cool. I'm not down on Marshall .. it's just that we need a shooting SF, first, then a sharp-shooting SG .. I just don't like the notion that a PG needs to be taken in this draft.

Hmm.. I don't know about this "Sharp-Shooting SG" notion you're referring to..

We got Hayward who we thought would be a decent shooter (except his last college year), then he shot pretty well last year, then he hit a slump this year.

I don't think you can just get a "Sharp-Shooting SG" and that player will shoot well ALL THE TIME..

It also depends on the quality of passing to some extent.

^^ Dude, I'm trying not to 'bully' you .. but you just seem set on making a point I'm missing. It's simple, we need a PG that can make a pass and others that can hit the shot. We're so far behind in the latter, that we need to be thinking, at every point possible, about fixing it.

If you just don't like me, then say so, and I'll stop trying to make my point.

Well here's the deal...we have Raja who can make shots right now, but he's old and who knows how long he can continue this. After him, Hayward is our best shooter and as of right now, he's streaky at best. So while Hayward can be a good shooter, we need more than one shooter in case somebody is going through a rough stretch. Having just one shooter isn't enough, you need multiple. Right now there's not a lot of good PG's out there in the draft, so to me it seems the smart thing to do would be to focus on our other weakness, which is shooting/scoring and this is a good draft to do that in.

Making me look at these awful PG's makes me wish Deron was back and was our GM/star by now.

On the plus side, you guys seem to be high on this Augustine kid that I don't remember anything of. And Charlotte wants more minutes for Kemba, so I can see Augustine getting traded.

But honestly, the PG solution is to draft one and have him develop chemistry with the young. Not to get a rental every 2 years, that's what New York and Jersey GMs do.
I just really hope that KOC is looking at Marshal right now and thinking...."Horny can fix that shot".

I don't think Calderon or Augustin are short time fixes. Augustin is on the last year of his rookie contract so he would be a RFA. It is realistic that if the jazz like him and he fits with our guys for the rest of the year then sign him for 4 or 5 more years.

Calderon is 30 but like I said it is realistic he Could give us a solid 5 more years. They are both good fits for what we need. The are ok 3 pt shooters enough that teams have to respect them both are decent passers. My point to this post was we could get a player via fa or small trade with out sacrificing our young guys that could do what drafting a pg could do right now.

Goran Dragic had another big game as a starter. Every time he has started this year he has played very well. Unrestricted free agent and could be had for a reasonable price.

I missed him on that list. I just worry that he is not a full Time starter. More of a great back up that can play great staters minutes when call upon.

20 and 8 assists. 4/5 from 3. Someone we definitely should look at.
