Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

Basically this… it’s not like it’s the worst thing ever… the NAW trade was worse… but we sold ourselves short and it isn’t like we have an armory full of second round picks right now. Most experts think THT will opt in and his deal is likely a little negative… but even if he breaks out you’ll have to pay top of market rate to keep him. Just not a deal that provides upside.

It also tips our hand a little more.

It also is just kinda wonky.

I also think it could be step one in a two part laker deal. Break it into two deals to do it sooner… maybe.

I think it’s worse. NAW could theoretically improve and we have team control. Ingles was also a non-contributor with his injury. THT can leave if he improves and Beverley is a playoff starter which every team can use.

Still a positive given the direction we’re going, but it’s hard to feel like we found the best deal. We did the Lakers two favors by eating THT’s contract and also giving them a good player they very much needed.

The NAW trade served it’s original purpose… to save 12M. It was easier to understand if you knew what to look for… so I concede… this trade is worse as it stands.

It's an ok trade. I don't think the internet hype and memefication of Beverley ever turned into real value for teams. I wouldn't think teams would get desperate for him at the deadline either since he is an expiring and signing him further would be a problem.

THT could surprise people with how fast he develops some aspects of his game in a better environment with some space.

Every team Bev been on goes to the playoffs. He’s good and very helpful… fantastic fit for LA.

THT has shown flashes… it’s whatevs… at very least hold out for something slightly better cuz it’s the effing lakers.

I remember everyone pining for Stanley Johnson in the draft. Well, we finally got him!

It’s fine, could be good. I’m not sure of THT’s value, but he’s young. Shrug.

The disappointment is in the lack of picks. But who knows what was available? PB was a surprising inclusion in the Gobert trade. It netted the Jazz THT. It’s fine, whatevs.

I have a theory that is half baked that I kind of actually believe. I think this is a down payment to satisfy LA until September 6th when we execute the three team trade that gets the two firsts. They may have been close to an Indiana deal and didn’t want to wait and trust Danny to do the deal all at once… it was a deal done in good faith that when the clock runs out and we have the NY deal done that we will do the main deal.

Where all outcomes lead to nothing or worse in two years? No.
That is completely untrue. There are outcomes with him that could be good in two years. He could play well and we keep him. He could play well and we trade him for something. He could be included in another trade that helps us get something we want. We will struggle to meet the min cap space so I am completely uncaring about 11 million in another season. Its more likely his salary at a 11 as an expiring alone would be helpful for a trade for us.

There was 0 upside or positive outcomes of keeping Beverly. He wasnt worth anything and wasnt helping the team, he would have hurt the team in multiple ways had we kept him. There is a reason 4 teams have no dumped him for very little in about 1 year.

What is our SF lineup before this trade?

Rudy Gay
Fonteccchio
Balmaro
Sneed
Juzang

4 of those guys have a combined < 30 nba games experience

Point guard / shooting guard / smaller than 6'4" "switchable" players:

Spida
Conley
Butler
NAW
Beverley
Beasley
Clarkson

Every guy on this list is better than every player on the precious list.

Swap the oldest pg who is your 3rd string option tbh for 2 wings. In a league where wings are the most important position, it ain't bad to balance out the roster.

He is 6'4" but has a 7'1" wingspan and looks like a small forward. He is our best prospect outside of possibly Font who hasn't played a second in the NBA.

This move also legitimizes the position that keeping Spida is still a possibility. If only as a talking point as NY considers what their real offer is.

We just got younger, longer, and more athletic. More balanced roster.

I also thought Stanley Johnson destroyed us last year.

I don't see the answer to the biggest question following this trade - how did this improve NYK's leverage?

On a more serious note - this is a bit of a let down, not because I hate the value, but because it probably eliminates our ability to trade for Westbrook and get those LAL picks. But maybe that option was never on the table to begin with... Maybe LAL indeed loves IND's offer much better.

THT is a good shot to take on a young player, but if he does pan out - he opts out next year and we have no control over where he goes and if he stays or not. And if he doesn't improve and continues to be meh, he picks his option and is negative for us. Meh! I really feel we could have done better with this Beverley contract.

He is a good fit for sure but he doesn't solve their spacing issues all that much and they lost 2 rotational defenders even if THT sucked as a fit.

You can wait out a little bit, I just don't think it changes much. Anyways, THT is as good a prospect as any.
