What's new

Big Al's new name should be Selfish Al

Anyone who saw the 3rd quarter of the Hornets game knows what I'm talking about.
To me, the best basketball to watch is when a play is executed correctly but Big Al's tough to watch, painful at times. Sure, he'll make a few and he did have a pretty good game, but it comes at the cost of involving nobody else. Favors doesn't get touches, Milsap, Kanter, everyone is just stagnant cause Al takes on 2-3 opponents on his own.

You can argue that they're stagnant and that's why he's not passing but even when they're moving he won't pass and everyone's given up on hoping for a dish when he's working on the post.

I think I read that he was number 2 in FGA's in the NBA at a 43% clip.

Big Al was in a zone in the third period. He single-handedly kept Utah in the game.

I have no problem with his performance.

Al definitely wasn't the problem tonight. The starting wings for the Jazz were atrocious.

Can't really hate on him to hard this game. The 3rd quarter he was on fire. I wouldn't call selfish, just dumb sometimes. When he gets doubled hard he panics, he tries to look for a pass, but isn't savvy enough to really see the floor, so he goes for a shot instead of what would probably be a turnover. I thought he did a decent job of finding guys out of the post most of the game though. Just has to realize when the doubles are coming better.

I think he's starting to get the team concept, cos if he doesn't get it quickly he's gonna be out of the starting lineup (or get traded).

So I think we should wait and see how he improves going forward.

Also I like how it should motivate Favors to play well when he comes in & try to pressure Corbin to start him. I think he'll be able to practice his moves on 2nd rate defenders. It's better than starting Favors every game - too much pressure on the young guy IMO.

Contemplating starting a new thread to showcase my suggestion for Raja's new nickname: "Suck" Bell.

Came to me in a dream. Thoughts?

The crappy players we have now make it difficult for me to watch the Jazz, and Raja is far and away the worst. But I think we need to come up with something better so far as a nickname to convey how bad he has been since rejoining the Jazz.

What I am mostly seeing is lack of cohesion in the team since Jerry left. We may have been bad at times when he was the coach but at least we played like a team. Now I don't see much of that anymore. We have selfish Al, selfish Devin, one-on-one Josh, bricker Bell, and chucker Miles -- with the chucker being the least selfish of the quintet.

When you are hot and everything you throw up is going in the basket you keep shooting till you miss. Have to hand it to Al, he had a nice game. This was the Al I wanted from the start. The question is what will we get from him the next game. Why do certain players get burned by fans no matter how they play.... Sheesh!

When we first got Al, I thought the Jazz would be smart to use the Olajuwon offense (1 post with 4 shooters). Tonight, Al showed us again why this would work really well. However, it's not traditional Jazz basketball. I think it'd be too big of an adjustment for many Jazz fans and our coaches apparently. Therefore, it's silly, no matter how well he plays, to keep him on this team that's never going to adjust to his strengths.

Although, this game showed a bit more of what I think Corbin's staff is trying to get to. I just worry that AJ might not be able to handle it this year. He keeps aggravating old injuries. How can we get any flow going if he misses every other game? In other words, if you saw him hobble at the end of the game, you'll guess like I am that he'll miss tomorrow's game. The positive is that our other bigs will get more development time earlier than later.

Bottom line? I really liked AJ's effort tonight. He was on a roll and his defense was better. We just need to better compliment his game and help him out of double-teams better by rotating quicker to where he can see teammates.

They key with an "olajuwon" offense is Al being able to consistently recognize oncoming double-teams, and having the on-cort awareness to pass it to the most open teammate. He is getting better, but he is in no way shape or form an Olajuwon yet, in terms of passing.

What we should all remember, is that Al has played on poor-shooting teams throughout his career. He's never had the luxury of having deadly shooters on the perimeter, and therefore has always been reluctant to pass it out, leaving him to his own devices instead. Its a damn shame Hayward isn't spotting up for more shots, and that Bell and CJ are so ****ing awful from three. If we shot the 3ball well, it would benefit our team in so many ways.

Nuts, this would've been a better thread title: "There's no Al in team"

Oh well.

In all seriousness, he did keep the team alive in the 3rd quarter but him not passing the ball in the future comes at the expense of developing the youth and a good Jazz offense. Hopefully he'll learn how to pass out of double and triple teams because it gets super annoying to watch him heave up another when 3 people are wide open.

I wish he'd pass more, but hey, nobody else seemed to be moving at all.

Howard also frustrates me with his chuckery, though I do appreciate him being active and trying to do something. It at least seems more aggressive than CJ's chuckery most of the time.
