It is the 25th Anniversary of the PC game series Civilization and the 6th game in that series has launched.

I've been playing this series since the original Civilization game. I know that for many of you there is a game that has played a major role in your life, and for me that game is Civilization. I have undoubtedly spent more time playing this game than any other game and very possibly have played more of this game than all other games combined.

Maybe with a little shame I will admit that I learned global geography largely through playing this game on Earth map. I have been playing this game since I was 14 years old. No other form of digital media has shaped me more than this game franchise.

Clearly deserves it's own thread.

Civilization is one of the main reasons I learned English. I remember playing it with a dictionary on my lap.

Edit: not addictionary.

Is this free and can I simply download it onto my laptop to play? Also, is it a big deal if I've never played before? Maybe most importantly, can you give me a quick overview of the game?

Been playing since I found Civ 2 on sale at Costco and bought it on a whim. With the Dinosaur expansion pack, whatever the name was. :-) In fact I've been thinking I should start another Caveman to Cosmos game in the near future.

Hopefully the new version doesn't disappoint.

In fact, I just started one! It's been 1.75 years since my last saved game, wow.

Its a RTS game, a really in depth one.

It is not a real time strategy, it's a turn based strategy. That's a huge part of its appeal. Reflexes play no part.

I first played the original sometime in '93. It is one of the greatest video game franchises of all time.

Oh yeah, bben a while since I played it.

Been playing every free moment since it came out 2 days ago. It's quite fantastic.

Really? Its so rare for games too actually be good on release in the last few years.

So far it's bug free for me. I have something like 500 hours on Civ 5, so I'm already a fan of the series. Civ 6 is different enough, but familiar enough, that I was able to jump right in. It already has a lot of depth even without any expansions (a problem with Civ 5). I can't wait to see how awesome it is a couple of expansions in.

I expected this to be the typical response to this thread. Cool to see there are so many people who can appreciate a game like Civilization.

I'm 362 turns in on my first game. Playing England on an island map (small) and getting close to a domination victory using massive sea power backed by trade.

I founded a religion early but have no idea how to build missionaries or prophets so that didn't go anywhere.

I like that cities aren't in unrest after they've been captured.

I think I missed on early game espionage. Had read about it but never saw how to do it while playing.

I think they went out of their way to launch a very fleshed-out game on day one. That was a huge criticism of Civ 5. This includes religion, tourism, espionage, archeology with the game at launch.

And yeah, the turn-based aspect is something I really love.

It costs $60, like most new big-name titles.

You can learn it, obviously. But it's a very large game with a lot involved. It'll take you weeks to learn all the ins and outs of the game engine.

It's a game where you start a civilization and try to win by dominating militarily, culturally, diplomatically, or technologically. You can play against the computer or other players.

Can one of you guys answer my questions?

What the game is about?

Basically you start the game with a settler unit and a basic warrior unit. You settle your first city with the settler and begin to explore the surrounding area with your warrior. In the city you begin building either improvements, like a water mill or something, or a unit, like another warrior or a scout or a new settler. Eventually you start bumping into other civilizations. You can have peaceful relationships with them and trade luxury and or strategic resources that are located within your boarders and that you've exploited by building mines or plantations or whatever else. Or you can go to war with them, using your units to attack their units and their cities.

Over time you develop technologies based on what science improvements you've made to your cities. These technologies lead to more improvements, better military units, etc.

Eventually you attempt to win the game through one of several victory conditions. You can get a domination victory, in which you capture all other civilizations capitals, a science victory by launching settlers into space to colonize other planets, a religious victory where you get the majority of the citizens throughout the world to follow your religion, a cultural victory where you generate more tourism than all other civilizations or a score victory where you get to a certain date and no civilization has achieved one of the other victory types.
