Board Game Recommendation: Viticulture

Friend bought Power Grid last week and we played it. Will be exciting to play the game with more than three people. Lots of strategy for it.

I've played Power Grid twice, once on the USA map and once in South America. I like how it always puts the leader at a disadvantage.

And re: pricing, when you get into the really complicated games like Twilight Imperium, you're getting into the $100 range.

Luckily my kids are still of the age where they enjoy playing games like Battleship and Chutes & Ladders. We wouldn't really have time for complicated games that take hours to play though either.

Complexity and play time are not strongly correlated. Advanced Civilization and Diplomacy are relatively simple games that take many hours to play; Dominion and Agricola are just as complex as Twilight Imperium, but generally don't last much more than an hour.

Depends on the card deck for Dominion.

Last time I played I played Agricola with the same group of friends, I had no negative deductions. Had entire field filled with pasture/farm/house, all three animals, vegetable, wheat. Had 4 rooms, 5 people. Just a blow out. Won by 30-40 points.

Man, I love it when games like that (as long as I'm the one in front).

Saturday is International Tabletop Gaming Day. Many local retailer's will have specials and a large attendance. It's a great chance to see what's gong on!

I really can't tell if he's being serious in this video or taking the piss... somebody help me.

It all seems pretty on-the-level to me. Viticulture is a light-medium game, so it's accessible to people who don't play these games with intensity, and it's heavily themed with a relatively well-known activity.

Viticulture has several forums at BoardGameGeek, and you can find many similar comments there.

What did you find hard to believe?

It's seemed like he was trolling, but pretended to be serious. Unless you've actually played the game/extension pack, you won't be able to tell the difference.

I think a lot of that is the Candyland-Monopoly-Risk effect. So many of the mass-marketed games are very luck-dependent, and I don't understand why anyone would want to play them two or three times in a month, much less a day. However, if you play more carefully designed games, they have a higher replayability factor. I can certainly see playing Viticulture 24 times in a couple of months, much less a couple of years.

Just a little over a day left in the auction.

One more thing to think about: not only do Stonemaier's games come with a money-back guarantee, but their resale value on EBay or BoardGameGeek marketplace has, to date, been well over the cost to purchase on KickStarter. I'm not saying this is an investment strategy, just that even if you don't like the game, you'll not only get your money back, but probably a little extra to boot.
