Boris Diaw Traded To Jazz (news, not just proposed trade)

Wish they would've done anything at all last offseason, but hey, can't change the past.

As long as Diaw can still guard centers this is fine. I know he played good defense on LeBron a few years ago.

Also, Diaw tends to abuse defensively-weak players better than most. Nothing wrong with obtaining some players with high basketball I.Q.s in the offseason.

San Antonio has traded forward Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz, league sources tell @TheVertical.
2:44 PM - 5 Jul 2016

The Jazz will send Olivier Hanlan, the No. 42 pick in the 2015 NBA draft to San Antonio. The trade would open up salary cap space for the Spurs to sign Pau Gasol and give Utah a veteran big man.

Diaw is a 34-year-old forward/center who has played 15 years in the NBA the last five for the Spurs, winning one NBA title. He averaged 6.4 points over 76 games (four starts) while shooting 53 percent from the field (36 from 3) during the 2015-16 season.

**** boys, this season is going to be exciting. DL has done nothing but impress me.

The Jazz needed some veteran depth, so they went out and got it. Had they done this last year, they likely make the playoffs easily. Hill, Johnson and Diaw can all help the Jazz this season without handicapping he team financially in the future. Next offseason, the Jazz need to deal with Hayward and Gobert. . . but they also have the ability to create another max salary slot if they want to chase a free agent to pair with the current team. Winning makes everything look better. DL has proven that he's willing to be aggressive, and Utah is clearly a team on the rise. With the new GSW super-power, the Jazz need to transform themselves into a top 5 team in order to have a shot at landing a top target. Getting to (and showing up) in the playoffs will go a long way towards that goal. The Jazz will be better immediately, without sacrificing financial flexibility - and they still have future assets to make moves to shore things up even tighter next year.

We've picked up Hill, Johnson and Diaw all without giving up really anything. Perfect off season by the front office.

Interesting. So his contract for this coming year is $6.5 mill, plus another $0.5 mill if he hits his weight incentives.

And next year it's non-guaranteed. So, they can move him for an asset to a team that needs cap space, cut him to create their own space, trade him for a replacement asset if he can get them anything or keep him if he fits well with the team. Jazz needed to upgrade Booker. This feels like that to me.

I think DL locks up Gobert this summer. Hayward will be the big fish next year.

Good moves
Now Jazz can weather some injuries and still win
Only way to beat the superteams now is with depth
Force GSW, Cavs, etc to play starters longer and maybe win by depth
Jazz now look like they have depth
