Box score reflections, game 1

I don't expect Favors to do much offensively by running stuff through him. However, OKC pushes the tempo and the Gobert/Adams matchup is a wash. So I think Favors needs to be crashing offensive boards like a mad man. Melo is not active on the defensive boards. And Favors isn't going to be athletic enough to nullify their fast breaks. So in my opinion, the guy needs to aggressively crash the boards on every shot we take. Make Russ and Adams work really hard against Gobert and Favors for rebounds.

Gobert/Adams is not a wash. Just because Gobert struggles against him more than other Centers does not mean he is better. Gobert had a huge effect defensively in that game, much more than Adams. Even Offensively Gobert had a bigger impact than Adams.

We are not going to crash hard on offensive rebounds. That is not our system. Snyder wants the guys to get back on defense. Against a team like OKC that can get out and run that is a good idea as well. If we start crashing the boards hard we will get a few more offensive rebounds but give up a lot of easy transition points.

Here is some advanced break down of the box scores from NBA.com

Jazz had 47 drives for the game vs 40 for OKC. We shot a much better percentages on those 56% vs 31% on more attempts. We also passed out of those drives more and turned the ball over less. But we didnt hit our shots on the drive and kicks. We only made 2 shots and they made 4.

We are an elite team at driving and kicking. Just as good as OKC and Houston who have some of the best players at it. We did a decent job here except making the shots on the kick out. We also passed up a couple open shots here, that cant happen in our system it kills our offense.

We had more catch and shoot opportunities than them, 19 fga to 18. But we didnt hit those open shots, we shot 31.6%. Although we were decent from 3 on those at 40%. So our inside catch and shoot shots were awful. OKC had very hot shooting and hit 50% of their catch and shoot including 54% from 3.

We took waaayyyyyyyy too many pull up jump shots this game at 27 and hit 40% of those. We actually did decent from 3 on these but they are a bad shot for our team and we relied on it too much. But they also backed off our guys on the switch and gave them the shot. We hit 45% of our 3s which is a great number. OKC shot 36 pull up shots which is a ton but again they were on fire and hit 45% of them.

We sucked *** at defensive rebounding. We have to be better at rebounding. Especially since we put such little effort into offensive rebounding. We also need to push the ball if they are going to crash that hard for offensive rebounds. They have 3 or more guys going for O boards.

Jazz ran 17.3 miles that game vs 16.3 for OKC.

We had 2 post ups vs 9 for OKC. I doubt this will change but I think we should get a couple more here and there. OKC does it for Adams to keep him involved and make the big defending him work more. I think Jazz should do this more with Favors but that hasnt happened all season and it isnt happening now, but I think it should especially if Melo or someone smaller is on him.

We had more steals and blocks and were more active on defense. I hope that continues.

The Thunder have to be thinking that they will let Mitchell get his if PG is obliterating Ingles the way he did yesterday. They like that trade.

If that’s happening then Mitchell needs to be attacking Brewer constantly, and/or Rubio needs to ****ing hit his shots. If we can make George have to play Mitchell then Ingles can do his thing.

I’m confident that Quin can figure out one tough defensive matchup in a 7 game series.

On the offensive end, Gobert vs Adams is a wash. As for Favors, he isn't going to stop fast breaks. Russ leads them and he ain't catching him unless he is at the 3 which doesn't help us. I don't think everybody should crash the boards but he should. Somebody pull up the stats - how bad does OKC outrebound us this year?

But favors does get back. You can't have both bigs crash the boards. You need one to get back.

It's not a race between favors and Westbrook. Westbrook is waiting for the board and then pushes the ball. Favors does and can beat the other big or a wing back.

If Gobert and favors crash we give them an easy fast break every miss. Jazz have whichever big is in position for the rebound crash and everyone else run back. That person is usually Rudy due to him being inside most often.

You might not like it but it isn't going to change. That is Snyder's system right now. Plus it makes sense. It's one reason we have a good defense. Sometimes I don't like it but against OKC it makes complete sense.

The box score was wrong on burks. He did miss a shot.

We get owned on the boards against the Thunder. I'm searching for solutions. You are probably right about what we will do.

Overall, I still think Favors is a liability if he cant score, rebound or outplay Melo in any way, shape or form.

I agree we got out rebounded. We do need to fix that. We really should not give up many offensive rebounds, especially when Favors and Gobert are on the court. That is a team effort not an individual.

Just because someone got more or less rebounds does not mean they were out rebounded individually. Favors boxes out very well. Melo got 0 offensive rebounds. Boxing out leads to rebounds for the team and that is all that matters. The solution is for the rest of the team to get better at boxing out and everyone on the Jazz needs to put effort into that and getting the rebound. That includes Gobert and all of the guards/wings. Gobert is one of the biggest culprits of not boxing out but he also contests shots and players dont rotate and box out for him. Favors can improve in this area but honestly he is one of the best on our team at team rebounding.

Rebounding comes down to basics. We did not do a good job bath basic box-outs. Stick your *** in the other guy's gut, frame him in with your arms. Gobert needs to be better with this. Favors does a decent job. But really this is a basic thing we just did not do. The reason Gobert got that one foul called on him, when Adams was behind him, was he did not square up on the box-out. Yeah Adams pushed him, but Gobert flails his arms to try to tip the rebound, or goes toward it, but does not box out all that well, so he flailed his arms, and it looks to the ref like he is out of position and hitting the guy who is in position. So really we need to focus on the basics.

Box score reflex ion not seen ......Donovan out coached Snyder......Donovan let his stars scorch Snyders defensive stoppers (who can't score)

One stat not being discussed is Adams only picked up 1 PF.

Sure he got away with a few but imo we need to put more pressure on the rim
a) To collapse the defense and give our shooters open looks
b) Hopefully get Adams in foul trouble

The answer.

PG hit 8 of 11 from 3. That won't happen again.

Assuming Rubio just had an off night, Jazz in 6. Utah wins if we see Rubio from the last few months.

To me Favors does have to do more, however I'm not strictly blaming him he needs help to get the ball and his teammates need to look for him more. In the first Qtr during the run Favors was involved, he didn't score directly but he got the ball in the paint and dished it to Rudy for 2 dunks. However I would've liked to see Rubio look to get Favors the ball more since he was struggling with his shot in game 1 and the percentages say Favors is good in the paint and has been really good the past couple months.

Now if Rubio is shooting well of course he can look for his shot a bit more but on games like the first game he's smart enough to know that Favors in the paint is a good % shot and part of that could be what Quin was talking about on Mon that he thought the spacing wasn't right so the passing lanes weren't there to get Favors the ball more.
