SALT LAKE CITY —
Boyd K. Packer, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at home Friday, July 3, 2015, at 2 p.m. MDT from causes incident to age. He was 90 years old.

“He was truly an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. From the crown of his head to the soles of his feet, he represented the Savior of the world,” said Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Thoughts?

I can do a voice impersonation of Boyd pretty much perfectly. It's my lone talent. It kind of loses its savor now that he is dead. I wonder if he still hates gay people in heaven?

My first reaction was one of sadness, as he has been an icon in the Church for so long. But I have also had a like/hate relationship with the man since I was about 14 and we were forced by our stake president to read, and then go to a fireside centered around, Packer's infamous 70's talk "to Young Men Only".

Even at that age I found this to be unsettling at best. This particular Stake President felt it necessary to really push this on the youth in the stake, I found out later, primarily because his son was gay. They also really pushed on the ************ issue. I really don't want to get into the details, suffice it to say that there were discussions that were of a, let's just say, borderline inappropriate nature (now that I am an adult and can see it through adult's eyes). It left a lot of kids very confused, and feeling like we had no one to talk to. And later, when I saw the gross inaccuracies in what he preached there, and the fact that he church still pushes it all as basically scripture, well I guess we chalk that one up to the fallibility of men, but with a basically doctrinal main point (self-control vs self-indulgence).

In the end I am sad about his family and the hole this leaves for them. By all accounts he was a great family man. I am sure he will be missed.

And I will miss him too. I really appreciated most of his talks over the years, with a few notable exceptions.

RIP Elder Packer.

I don't understand why this is article is such a big deal. Outside of religious reason having full control of bodily urges is seen as healthy. A good example of this is Sex Transmutation that is explained by Napoleon Hill in "Think Rich Grow Rich".

Having control is one thing. Oppressing your desires is another, especially when failure to do so leads to very unhealthy amounts of guilt and stress.

Avoiding pleasures that can be had in moderation and with full control is not a positive in my book.

(I have no idea what "to young men only" contains, I'm assuming)

From a gay perspective, and even a Christian perspective (read Matthew 5:39) this part is pretty disturbing. Unless we are being lead to believe that the companion mentioned tried to rape this guy or force himself on him after being told no.

I repeat, very plainly, physical mischief with another man is forbidden. It is forbidden by the Lord.

There are some men who entice young men to join them in these immoral acts. If you are ever approached to participate in anything like that, it is time to vigorously resist.

While I was in a mission on one occasion, a missionary said he had something to confess. I was very worried because he just could not get himself to tell me what he had done.

After patient encouragement he finally blurted out, “I hit my companion.”

“Oh, is that all,” I said in great relief.

“But I floored him,” he said.

After learning a little more, my response was “Well, thanks. Somebody had to do it, and it wouldn’t be well for a General Authority to solve the problem that way.”

I am not recommending that course to you, but I am not omitting it. You must protect yourself.

The "somebody had to do it" part sure sounds like it wasn't self-defense. It was ordained by the GA to put the other boy down.

If you believe the whole "God wouldn't let the prophet lead the Church astray" line of thinking (which is utter BS), then try this on for size. Elder Perry just passed. Then President Packer. Scott and Monson aren't too far behind.

Is God clearing out the old generation for a more "accepting" leadership? Elder Christofferson has a very close relationship with the LGBT community and has led a lot of the Church's softening stance on those issues.

Is he being "promoted" within to end the silly bigotry from current/past leaders?

Get out your tin foil hats...

I have a lot of respect for Packer's unapologetic approach. He said what he felt was right, regardless of the flack he took for it.
That being said, the last few years I've found him more annoying than inspiring. Most GAs now, when addressing the gay issues, make a point to at least mention that we need to be respectful of others. Not Packer. Same old message; homosexuality is contrary to the laws of God. Fine, we all know that. Church members don't need the fire and brimstone sermon. This isn't the early days of the church. They need to be reminded that Christ (that dude they profess to pattern their lives after) was all about love, respect, and compassion, and not about self righteousness or derision.

***** you should have said *****.

Edit: Really I can't say *****. *** on!

Although I agree with what you're generally saying, this isn't entirely true.

One thing that bothers me about "The Church" is I ask my kids every Sunday what they learned about Jesus. Most weeks (the last 7) they say, "nothing. But I did learn about Joseph/Brigham/tithing/etc."

Joseph Smith's church and the corporation that exists today are two very different entities.

Anyways, my two cents. Don't know why I quoted you...

Can you be more specific? Are there instances in the bible where Jesus was being a dick? I'm sincerely curious.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't put this in there... But being human I bet He crop dusted a few of the masses. Some surely took offense to that. I wonder if He got a good chuckle about it. I'm picturing many Larry the cable guy moments. Additionally, I bet people had issues with being downwind if He ever took a number 2 behind the wrong bush.

Blasphemy!

Rumor has it, that there are forests of Cedar and mustard trees in Israel where His defecate fertilized the soil.

I bet the paint brushes Davinci used were widdled from the bloodline of these them there trees. I also bet that when you join the Illuminati you get a set of pencils made from them too. Imagine the founding fathers of the U.S. and their set of matching pencils and pens!

Were George Washington's teeth carved out of these trees?

Dick probably isn't the best use of words to describe it, but one time, the dude made a whip of chords and drove out a bunch of bad dudes from the temple court.

Which translation are you reading?

I have read a version where this was interpreted differently. I have been taught that His tummy was sour due to a turkey burger, a bag of cabbage, and some pickled eggs he bought from a vendor. I bet that flatulants was ripe to get everyone to scatter. Do you think the storm He calmed at sea was just a carne asada burrito and a bowl of ice cream from Beto's or just the gas passing ending?

Not really accurate, unless I'm reading the passage wrong. He used the whip of chords to drive out the cattle in the area.

If this is the only instance compared to the majority of his selfless acts, well, dude is still pretty inspiring in my book.
