Brandon Doman interviews for Weber State HC

At least that's the word on the street up here in Ogden. Doman seems like an extremely nice guy but I can't imagine how this would be a good hire or even why he's being considered.

Thoughts?

One thought I have is I saw Doman working for KSL news and he needs to invest in a tailor for his suits. It was bad.

I saw that list the other day and it was like 100% BYU guys I think. There was Doman, Gary Crowton, Justin Ena, and one more that escapes me. I actually kind of wish Crowton was the OC at BYU right now. Life coming full circle type of thing. I think it would work.

My singular thought on Doman is that he seems like the type of guy that has a better chance of being a good head coach than a coordinator so I think it would be a decent/good hire if he cobble up a good staff. I don't know what the pedigree is of the typical position coach at Weber or anything, but Doman has a lot connections at the high school level in Utah + the other coaches that BYU fired last year haven't picked up jobs yet so there is potential to put together a good staff.

The last part of your post makes me nervous. I really don't want to see Weber load up on a bunch of BYU castoffs that had trouble getting jobs after being fired.

As you alluded to, there is another BYU name on the list, it's BYU's current DC (I'm having trouble remembering his name but I think it's Howell?). I realize Bronco runs the defense, but from what I've read he's a young, energetic guy who I think may have some ties to the Ogden area.

I agree with you that Doman may be better suited as an HC than a coordinator but I wouldn't take that chance if I were Weber. If the guy can't be an effective coordinator, I'd think you'd at least like to see his skills as an HC on the JUCO level before giving him the keys.

Why don't they just hire Roscoe when he get's fired? Isn't that what they did with McBride after Utah fired him?

McBride spent a few years as a position coach for Kentucky before Weber State hired him.

Too bad Weber really screwed up McBride's retirement. He built the program from nothing after Graybeal resigned, and Bovee had the infinite wisdom not to hire from within McBride's circle, a guy would build upon what McBride did. Instead, he went for another homerun, hired John L. Smith seemingly oblivious to his debt problems, and Smith started doing what you'd expect a guy who had been a head coach on the BCS level, break down the program to build it his way. Then he left for money months in and no games coached. Blew up the program. Not even that great of a coach. STUPID STUPID STUPID. Now two years later we're COMPLETELY broken down. Not a ton of talent on the field or on the sideline.

And since we have NOTHING, we need a guy with the clout to draw in talented coaches under him. Now would be the time to do a John L Smith type hire and not a promoted coordinator hire. However, a former coordinator under McBride might still work. McGiven is at Utah State and he was McBride's offense and likely has similar recruiting ties.

Definitely an out of nowhere hire. He was certainly not on the radar.

Important that he did get tutelage from McBride, so that's a good thing in my mind. We'll see how he handles a team. That's the biggest question currently.

The guy is such a recruiting whiz, that I think that alone makes it a good hire for Weber. Let's see what kind of staff he can put together.

I don't know Jay Hill from Lauren Hill, but while there is a Weber State topic on here.....

What's up your basketball team? Losing to Utah Valley was only semi-acceptable back when Ronnie Price played there.

The previous games have been rebounding and free throw shooting. Looking at the box score, free throws were fine but they got 15 offensive rebounds. Neither team shot all that well, and the rebounds were the deciding factor. Weber is young. I worry a bit about their focus.

Rahe is an amazing recruiter. He's still at Weber because he can't win a big game or a tough road game.

Kind of fits for Hill. Football is different from basketball. On recruiting alone, Weber can be in the top half of the Big Sky. Can't win without coaching, though.
