I mean I'm not a scholar in Brazil's government, but it isn't like Trump hasn't repeatedly expressed his affinity for leaders with less restrictions than he has to deal with. If he didn't have those restrictions would he be any better?

Globally, we need to dig deeper and resolve issues with the 21st century issues of economic and social displacement. I don’t know the answer. But I think worldwide you’re seeing a decline in the faith of governments and traditional democracies in industrialized countries with a relatively prosperous middle class. You’re really not seeing nationalism and fascist movements in 3rd world agrarian countries but you are in countries that you’d deem to be fairly stable (Turkey, France, Poland, Brazil).

Something needs to be done to restore faith in democracy, cut down on corruption, and provide people with the safety to drop their resentment against change, losses of manufacturing, and immigrants.

I don’t think we’re seeing a complete repeat of the late 19th century and early 20th but we’re seeing an echo. Back then government corruption was rampant and wealth inequality was yewge, male and female suffrage was bringing about drastic social change (just like LGBT rights have brought about change), immigrants faced backlash, and middle class workers faced changing economies.

It took 2 world wars to sort it all out.

I’m guessing nuclear deterrent is one of the main reasons why another world war hasn’t started. But what type of future will our kids and grandkids have if these economic and social issues aren’t resolved?

I haven't read up on either of these "leaders". I listen to ordinary people "on the street" in these places.

really, in places like these, there is not enough "social context" for due process. Gangs rule the streets, and you can't do anything without actually doing a real war on them.

you bat-mad liberals don't seem to wanna complain about Putin or Xi or that socialist demagogue in Venezuela for all their criminal misconduct, or even our own Obama and Hillary, so you are all flat out hypocrites wanting to call out "radical right wing extremists".

Trump, for sure, is nothing like what your narrative demands he be. He is living within our laws, but you don't use truth in your jaws.

Just another country fed up with neo-communists. Thus a full swing effect to radical right. I can bet that in 2019 liberals are losing election in Canada by far margin as well. We do not have any radical right candidates though.

Why are you not blaming the attitude of those brazilians who join the police force and are eagerly waiting to kill random people? IMHO even if the president says that killing others is OK then most of the sane people still oppose it. Usually the nation/country deserves the leader that it gets. IMHO it seems that it is the easy way out to blame the person who orders something bad instead of those who actually implement it. But as long as the smell of money is not bad, then of course you will find followers … for example, it is unfortunate, that we do not have video or other evidence about the discussion that went something like that:

Good evening honey, how was your day, what did you do today?
Well, we managed to finally assemble and test a gas chamber which is able to gas 10 adults per minute.
Wow, what a nice project, i am so happy for you.

The scary (and for my brain it is pretty hard to understand the emotions etc) thing is that this kind of conversation was probably quite common in Germany some long time ago… and it was not between Hitler and Göring but between ordinary and in general well educated people, who also had families.

So, in reference to other world leaders right or left, who exercise Statist authority with less regard for human rights, as some of you believe Trump is prone to do, I am simply trying to move the discussion toward actual measures that would really help.

I don't think activists working either or both sides of any "issues of the day" are always helpful. Often, they are badly managed resources for higher level interested parties. I don't think it's uncommon for higher level players to actively fund or orchestrate both sides of an argument that can be the reason for more power in the hands of government, or in the hands of interested parties.

So you'll find me trying to test the discussion a bit. I'd like to understand what is going on better. Talking about stuff moves me in that direction.... understanding others would help too.

When I saw my first little pamphlet passed out in grade school about the UN, I figured it was propaganda. When I read stories about the American Revolution and how the Brits treated the colonies, I thought that was a good thing. I think human liberty and human opportunity are values to be maximized.

I consider most "management" to be corruptible however well-intended, and I think it is my duty to provide pushback for those "interests". I like the idea of labor unions, but in my experience unions today are corrupted, owned generally by the "management" rather than representing the workers.

I'd start a new political party or a new movement I suppose, but when I'm dead and gone, whatever I could build would become part of the same old problem.

I had a long time acquaintance with a man who worked in one of those camps. He had the attitude of absolute penitence, that he could never justify himself for it. But he said he did it because it was his job, and he was told to do it. And he didn't think he had another choice. He was an old man when I knew him, and he was very quiet about everything, but he pointedly would state the facts of his past. He needed to do that to try to be right about things now and in forever.

What is scary is the young //// (no racial ethnic slur here.... shall I say young hothead or young buck instead, no just hash it out) sort of ideologues we have who have great visions for a better world, who are willing to do whatever it takes to get there......
