Break out, or fluke...

This squad has to hide four poor defenders in front of Derrick Favors, who's at times a highly overrated defender too.

He is not that presence inside, because he is undersized and he is not quick enough to defend stretch players at the 4. He also has not that huge Body as players like Dwight, Hibbert, Asik or BIG-AL have...

But he has talent at both ends of the floor. He could get elite with time, but not right now.

The Jazz had top ten defenses with Boozer too, regardless of not having anywhere near the caliber of defenders surrounding him (i.e. Memo was no Joakim Noah).

Haven't been watching a lot of games lately, but I remember Hayward being at least an average defender? And I would not call Marvin a poor defender either.

Hayward is good 1-on-1 when he plays the 2, but he still struggles to rotate and help the helper.

Marvin is a good defender at the 3, but since he's been playing the 4 all year long, he's been consistently outmatched. It's embarrassing. Kanter doesn't play because of his defense and lack of floor spacing, but Marvin can't defend 4's, and Kanter isn't allowed to shoot 3's. Corbin's a hypocrite.

Marvin isn't that bad at defending 4's, he just sucks at rebounding when the other big goes to contest shots. He forgets to rotate over and box out.

He hasn't contained any true 4 all year. He is only good against stretch 4's not named illyusova or kevin love.
It's a waste IMO. Marvin was a really good wing defender last year. I think that's where his value lies.

The second a bigger PF puts some weight in to him in the post he gets called for the foul because he has to push back or wrap them up.

Kanter should be getting minutes with Favors learning positional defense. Marvin at the 3 would immediately mean less perimiter player leaking in and embarassing Kanter. Marvin at the 3 and Favors at the 5 would go a long way towards integrating Kanter.

Kanter at the 5 with Evans at the 4 is a joke.

This. Hayward's team defense is sloppy and unfocused. Jefferson is the only guy who consistently makes heady rotations, but he's too old now for his vet know how to make much of an impact.

When defense is this bad you can't really call many of the players average or good defenders. The Jazz have defensive issues at every position with the exception of Favors IMO.

Not just the low post either. They attack him in the high post a lot to open up cutting options or get a big body past him and sealed off.

Do you honestly think DL didn't re-sign Millsap because of Kanter? That was the reason?

Can a team afford to invest $30M+ in three bigs (assuming Kanter is in the future plans of the Jazz)? I think at the time, the Jazz were thinking Kanter and Favors would be the starters. And Millsap, who had publicly stated he thought of himself as a starter, would then have to come off the bench.

Jazz were negotiating with Millsap right up until the time the GS deal came along (and also Carroll). It was really a decision between fighting for the 6th-8th with no cap space going forward or taking a year off from playoff contention, getting a lottery pick (and I firmly believe they were expecting somewhere in the 10th range all along), then supplementing the team next season with 1-2 FA's.

Assume the Jazz had re-signed Millsap, Carroll and brought in a solid veteran behind Burke. Jazz get the 8th seed, maybe win a game against OKC, and have the 23rd pick in the draft. There is no cap space to get FA's next season: Millsap, Carroll and a backup PG have eaten that up. There is also no GS pick this draft nor in the future. Team outlook?

You gotta love big fat guaranteed contracts.

Remind me what Favors' record is when he starts without Trey? Oh yeah, we we started 1-14, or 1-21 if you count preseason games past Oct. 8th.

Now remind me what Favors' record in the starting lineup w/o Kanter coming in off the bench...

Point is, people throw around that ridiculous stat like it actually means something. All that you can clearly deduce from it is that our team wasn't healthy and didn't have all of its firepower. It does not mean Kanter shouldn't start, or Favors' is a hero.

I'm not a Favors' hater (just check my alias), but I've been disgusted a few times this year by his lack of effort.

That was with Sloan though, not Corbin.

Repped.
Kanter the scapegoat

Does it matter? He'll likely get 20 mins of playing time his next game with absolutely no reason given to him other than he needs to "earn" his time just like the vets have done.

I was off by 3. Kanter got 23 mins tonight.
Shouldn't complain too much, though. Burks played 37. And Jeremy is getting some decent burn. He's good to have around as a 9th/10th man.

You are correct about Evans. He was another solid picku for Jazz in the second round. They could write book on how to draft in the second round.
Wasn't Mark Eaton a 4th rounder?

I thought Eaton was just Larry's mechanic who happened to be real tall so Larry asked him if he wanted to play in the NBA and Mark said ok.

That play last night where Kanter was so worried about the guy picking him baseline that he lost vision of both Gortat and the ball handler was embarrassing.

I don't know how he continues making these dumb mistakes and still gets playing time. Put in Gobert or someone who will actually try on defense.

You can't do that! Playing Gobert will ruin his development!!!
