There is a new king of the apples. All hail the glorious Gala.

The Red Delicious apple, an easy-to-transport variety that dominated grocery selection for decades, is no longer the most popular variety in the U.S. as the rise of the Gala apple and other fresh fruits signal changing consumer tastes and greater diversity in diets.

U.S. growers in 2018 will produce 52.4 million boxes of Gala apples, up 5.8 percent from last year, and 51.7 million of Red Delicious, down 11 percent, the U.S. Apple Association said Thursday in a statement. A box weighs 42 pounds (19 kilograms). Red Delicious has been the nation’s top apple for at least five decades, the group said.

My question is, to curtail production of something like apples. Do they just route the harvest to other uses (animal feed, juice, whatever) or do they leave it on some trees, or maybe even remove trees? I suspect the just re-purpose the apples to something else.

Man, this thread is so disappointing considering the fact that this is Jazzfanz. The best apple of all is the JAZZ apple. It is a hybrid of the Gala and Braeburn. It has a slight hint of pear with a great balance of sweet and tart. If you haven't had one, you need to.

I'm ashamed.

Can confirm, jazz apples are dope. Pink Lady, Jazz and Fuji apples are my go to.

Red Delicious is the worst.
This in spades. I swear most people must buy it just to put it on display because it looks the most stereotypically "apple-y". It has terrible texture, that thick skin almost like a layer of wood, and bland flavor. I do not get the popularity. But then again, vanilla is year after year the most consumed flavor of ice cream, so our society must just fit that profile. Crappy and bland.

I enjoy a Gala or a Fuji. Pink Lady and Honeycrisps are good. The Jazz apple is pretty good too, but harder to find. I usually end up with Galas because they are reasonably priced, plentiful, and taste good.

My daughter makes a killer pie with 5 different kinds of apples, from Granny Smiths to Galas. Fantastic.

I'm not a big apple guy. If I have to go for an apple, then I like galas. Best melon is canary. Best watermelon is yellow watermelon because it looks crazy. Best peach is white peach, from a farm that let the fruit ripen before picking them.

I think vanilla gets a bad rap. It's versatility gets held against it for some reason.

The reference is to people who only like plain vanilla. Not those who like vanilla because of its versatility.

Check out this crazy watermelon I got last month.

Vanilla isn't plain though. It's super complex, It has something like 200 flavor compounds. It just has the reputation because it's in so many things.

What's the average number of compounds in ice cream flavors?

A cursory Google search bore few results. Cocoa has a lot doing on with it as well. From what I could tell vanilla beans boast a wider variety of volatile compounds than any other spice. A lot of people are so used to artifical vanilla which is basically just vanillin, leaving out hundreds of other flavors.

It has that reputation because what is marketed as Vanilla has very little Vanilla in it. A rich vanilla anything is dope as ****.
