So, we've all probably seen this thread and pots similar to this before, but you haven't seen it from me yet, so deal with it.

For quite a while, several posters (mainly PKM) discussed how this was a really weak draft class for PG's. Now I know Burke had a good college career, but lets be real here...he's not some great player. In a normal draft, I don't take him top 10, maybe not even top 15. So lets just go ahead and get this idea that he's our savior out of the way right now. Let me also say none of this post has anything to do with the SL games. I haven't watched any of the games and won't.

Now then, Burke is kinda small, not that athletic and plays hero ball. Undeniable facts. He is a good, albeit streaky, long range shooter, shows good poise and is an excellent leader. If you look at his college year, he will need time to develop and get used to the competition. Be prepared for some good games, and a lot of really bad games. Be prepared to acknowledge that he is just an average to slightly above-average starting PG. I like Burke, want him to succeed, but I think a lot of people have a gross misconception on the type of player that he is and that he's going to be.
 
I don't think you can find a single serious post of mine saying that Burke is going to be an all-star.


He was simply the best player the Jazz could have drafted in this draft IMO, and he has the skills to make his (talented) teammates better. He offers many things (leadership, playmaking) that our team has sorely missed since....Dwill? He was a very smart risk to take for our FO, and I think that he will pan out.

His limitations-- mainly the fact that his frame hasn't been filled out yet (not worried about his length in any sense) will make finishing at the hoop harder for him. However, with ample court spacing, and good big-men to finish plays (both of which we have), I think Burke is in an incredibly ideal environment to succeed.

What his ceiling is, will completely depend on his work ethic, and how much time he puts in to strengthening his body, to handle fighting through screens, and finishing at the other end. Fortunately, I don't think very many people question the work ethic of Trey Burke.

This is how I have always felt.
Which is why I hope that if parker, wiggins, and randle are off the board when the jazzz draft, I would like the jazz to darft harrison

Burke is gonna be legit. Point guard of the future. Buy stock while its low, bishes
 
He will have a bit of a rough year...but I think he will be a good point guard within a couple of years. Not great maybe, but good. I think he will be ok.
 
A slightly above average PG would be just perfect. We don't need an all-star at every position, and we already have a marginal all-star (Hayward), and two who aren't that far off (Favors, Kanter). So as long as Burke can develop into a solid floor leader with good passing skills, I think we got exactly what we needed. Otherwise, we'd have to get rid of some of them anyway.

Agreed and well said. Lets hope he can run the offense and play some D.

When I evaluate young talent I look for one skill that I think will translate to the NBA. When people would bash Kanter I saw a young guy with a skill that translates, ie rebounding. It is irrelevant if young players never grows or gets better (which they all do) if they have a skill which translates to the next level. In Burke's case his handle translates to the NBA level. He needs to speed up the game, push the ball down the court more but his handle in NBA good. I wish he was taller and faster, but if he was taller and faster we wouldn't have got him at 9. Let the kid play I think will be happy a year or two from now. If he doesn't get any better at least you have a back-up point guard that can bring the ball down the court under pressure.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. Is he our PG of the future? Quite possibly. I think he will be. Will he ever be an all-star? I'm leaning towards no.

And I wouldn't say I always take the safe route in projecting players. I was one of the few touting Austin Rivers and saying MKG would be a bust (relative to his draft position). Just because I'm right more than you doesn't mean I take the safe route, it just means I'm better than you.

But yeah, I don't exactly know if Burke will ever be an all-star-- and quite frankly, I don't care. I'm more concerned with whether he can make Favors and Kanter all-stars-- I'm not really caring too much for his own personal production.
