Burke and Current Expectations

Drafting is not an exact science, nor is player development.... (See Paul Millsap).

The Jazz drafted a PG who has shown himself to have the qualities they need. Trying to predict whether he will be an All-Star or just a good player is kind of silly. His ceiling depends on how hard he works and the opportunities the Jazz give him.

I prefer to be optimistic!!!

I like Trey Berk cuz his second name is Berk.

Trey Burke will be rich man's raymond felton, you will see.

But what makes a PG an all star? You have great PGs like Paul. But sometimes a PG becomes great by having great players around him. I like Burkes chances to be an all star. Because I believe in our young guys to help him shine.

So, we've all probably seen this thread and pots similar to this before, but you haven't seen it from me yet, so deal with it.

For quite a while, several posters (mainly PKM) discussed how this was a really weak draft class for PG's. Now I know Burke had a good college career, but lets be real here...he's not some great player. In a normal draft, I don't take him top 10, maybe not even top 15. So lets just go ahead and get this idea that he's our savior out of the way right now. Let me also say none of this post has anything to do with the SL games. I haven't watched any of the games and won't.

Now then, Burke is kinda small, not that athletic and plays hero ball. Undeniable facts. He is a good, albeit streaky, long range shooter, shows good poise and is an excellent leader. If you look at his college year, he will need time to develop and get used to the competition. Be prepared for some good games, and a lot of really bad games. Be prepared to acknowledge that he is just an average to slightly above-average starting PG. I like Burke, want him to succeed, but I think a lot of people have a gross misconception on the type of player that he is and that he's going to be.

Before the draft I didn't get all the hype for Burke as a top ten pick. I see him taking 3 or four years to develop, but I do have faith that he will develop. Hell we may be developing the next Mike Conley. Not comparing there games...

As I recall it took Conley a while to get to where he is now. He's a very good pg, he's not an Allstar, but I bet there's at the very least 15 to 18 teams that would love to have him. The jazz need to be patient, and let Burke figure out how to play with his limitations. He's smart a hard worker, and does know how to play the pg position. Maybe Malone can introduce Burke to John Stockton. John had all the same limitations as Burke does.

If SL was a good way to scout talent, then Christmas and Roberts would have nba contracts.

I'm not sure what an "average" NBA point guard is any more, but average should be good enough. What our team needs is a point guard that:
-- is savy enough to push the ball when needed
-- can make that timely pass into the low post without commiting an ungodly amount of TOs
-- can manage the shot clock effectively
-- is quick enough to play passable defense
-- whose outside shot gets enough respect to keep the defense honest.

Rebounds and steals would be nice, but are not critical. Heros need not apply.

We don't need a Deron or Paul, we need a Derrick Fisher. Everything I've seen of Burke says he can develop into the point guard we need, just maybe not the point guard some want.

Looks like MCW beat out Burke, at least for Summer League. Ouch.

Andre Drummond, Kelly Olynyk, Jeremy Lamb, Victor Oladipo and Terrence Jones were named to the 2013 Orlando Summer League All-Tournament First Team.

On the Second Team were Reggie Jackson, Miles Plumlee, Ian Clark, Tyshawn Taylor and Solomon Hill.

Dwight Buycks, Michael Carter-Williams, Tony Mitchell and Mason Plumlee were amongst Honorable Mentions.

How it will probably be this season:

I think Conley is the closest we're going to get on player comp for Burke. Conley is a little more athletic, but Trey will be a better shooter (despite SL). Let's hope.

I think most are of the same opinion of Burke, people are just slightly misunderstanding how others perceive him. I.e. those that are very excited about him (like myself) don't necessarily think he'll be a 20/10 PG, just a floor general who brings everything we need to balance out our roster for the foreseeable future. Likewise, most who are down on him don't necessarily think he'll suck, they think he just isn't going to be Chris Paul. Most of us think he'll be good, not incredible...that just makes some of us more excited than others.

I'd say the up/under on Burke's stats (not necessarily as a rookie) are 15 points and 7 assists.

This is how I have always felt.
Which is why I hope that if parker, wiggins, and randle are off the board when the jazzz draft, I would like the jazz to darft harrison

You can have the best of both worlds - take Wiggin/Parker with our pick, and take Aaron Harrison with GSW pick.

That would be my dream draft next year.

Yes, we're totally landing #1 pick. No question about it.

I just hope Trey Burke doesn't turn out like Austin Rivers. He is the only person I can find who had similar stats to Trey Burke for Summer league. (I couldn't find TO averages for these)

Austin Rivers 32.0 MPG 10.0 PPG 2.5 RPG 3.5 APG 21.1% FG

Trey Burke 28.0 MPG 9.0 PPG 4.3 RPG 3.7 APG 21.4% FG

If Trey Burke turns into a Kemba Walker I would be happy.

I will be happy with a solid starter that can distribute and be a leader.

hahaha... you've gotto be optimistic bro!!

Okay, but it's just incredibly unlikely. Can we land Parker? Maybe. It depends on where he ends up in the draft. Wiggins? No way. We'd need the #1 pick. We won't be nearly that bad this year, and it's foolish to base your hopes on such a remote chance.

I'll be happy with a top 10 pick.

Agreed on the top 10 pick.

Trey Burke:

- Best playmaker and floor leader of the last 3 drafts.
- Best pick-and-roll PG of the last 3 drafts, pending how Nate Wolters turns out.
- Underrated quickness just because he doesn't have a blow-by first step.
- Underrated athleticism just because he does't play over the rim.
- Needs to get stronger and a bit tougher.
- Needs to learn to use more arc and place shots higher on the backboard when he's trying to finish inside.
- Can easily put up 14/8 mixed in with the players we have, which may be all we need.
- Made Tim Hardaway Jr., Mitch McGary and Glen Robinson III look like great pro prospects by drawing defenses and making the right read at Michigan. Everyone of those guys needed to be set up in order to score.
- Handled big-time pressure every night in a very competitive Big 10.
- McCollum has more upside due to his size and ability to create shots for himself, while Burke is the safer pick as a facilitator.

He's 20. He's learning a new offense, and he's adjusting to NBA physicality. He hasn't even met Derrick Favors yet. He's been in the league for literally 1 week. Give him a furkan break.

The one thing I didn't like about him last year was his propensity to take long jumpers early in the shot clock. It's like he was conceding that he couldn't attack the defense, so he settled for long jumpers. If he runs into that situation with the Jazz, I hope he gives up the ball to Hayward or Burks and runs a route instead.

The other thing is that he's listed at 6'1", but I'm not sure he really is. I think it's safe to project him as a slightly better version of Jameer Nelson, who actually did make an All Star team in 2009 when he averaged 16.7 pts and 5.4 assists. That was the Orlando team that made the NBA Finals and lost to the Lakers.
