Burks at #12

an unguarded or little contested 3 is a very high % shot in today's nba, not to mention the second most efficient shot behind a free throw. it should be utilized accordingly.

I like this guy!!! He can hit free throws so that tells me he has a good shot... He might need some fine tuning but I picture him being a little more athletic version of Wes Mathews, he might not be as good defensively but for the 12th pick in the draft, I'm really happy with Burks, I think he has got awesome potential.

Get him in the gym with Horny after the lockout is over. If the kid really does have a chip on his shoulder then he should be working at improving his shot all through the lockout. Of course Horny can't really have anything to do with him until the lockout ends.

Love, love this pick. Of course being a Colorado homer has a lot to do with it, but I have a feeling this kid will be special if he can improve his jumper.

Great draft overall IMO for the Jazz.

I like but don't love this pick. Looking at what was left, I think trading down and getting Hamilton would've been my preference, but this isn't bad.

The good comes with the bad, and I think Burks is boom or bust (eerily like Kanter in that regard). A ball-dominant 2 that doesn't stretch the floor and isn't known to D up? Sounds like potential to be poor-man's Evan Turner's rookie year. Or he finds a way to translate his game and could be a star. Who knows? I'm not bummed, but this is definitely a wait-and-see pick before I can have strong feelings one way or another.

I think this will be somewhat of a lesser issue after the lockout.

You only hope so. Maybe that played in Jazz's mind a bit when they picked Kanter. Foreign player, with a turkish connection in Memo has better chances of wanting to stay in Utah

I like Burks. He probably was BPA. The question you have to ask is what the degree of separation in BPA is between him and 30. For my money, we should have worked a trade to get Mirotic. But if KOC thinks his ceiling is really high, I'm on board.

Didn't they say as Mirotic was being drafted that he would not be coming to the NBA for at least 4 years? Why would you want to draft him now and wait that long?

.....never heard of this kid...but why be overly concerned about his 3 point shooting? The Jazz don't like to shoot many 3's to begin with. We want HIGH percentage shots! Yes, 3 pointers are nice and we'll get our share. But in the paint domination and 2 point shots are the better formula for winning basketball, especially in the playoffs!
So true so true. Just look at the Mavs sucking this year relying on 3pt shooting

This is why I like Burks. 20 ppg as a sophomore despite being handicapped from behind the arc is damn impressive. The kid's mid-range game is awesome. His ability to create on his own and get to the line is very good. He has very good defensive ability and contrary to what Numberica said, does play some defense. Not Chris Singleton defense. But solid d that could get better given his athleticism. His three point shooting improved from 19 to 29% from his freshman to sophomore year and he has great mechanics.

If the kid has the right mental makeup and work ethic, I see no reason alongside Hornacek and some other young and excited players, this kid can't get excited too, work on his perimeter game, and in 3-4 years time be a hell of a complete player.

I know this is sacrilege but the kid reminds me of a less athletic/less strong Dwayne Wade, minus the intangibles.

I agree, ability to get to the line and create his own shot are really good for this kid, but let's not compare him to Wade just yet. Wade took his team to final 4, and was a true difference maker. Burks has some of the same qualities, but nowhere near a difference maker Wade was. Maybe Maggette is a better comparison for Burks.

I saw Burks play quite a bit in the Big 12. Worse case scenario: Quincy Lewis. Best case: Wade Jr. Probably somewhere in between, but hoping it is closer to the latter. Also saw that Jacob Pullen wasn't drafted. This kid from K-State is a stud at the point. I hope he gets a Jazz invite, though I'm sure others will be calling him today as well.

Maggs was an insane athlete too so I'm not sure that's fair but as far as his skills and such, perhaps that's a more fair comparison. And also, I don't think he could even be Wade. Like you said, Wade led his team to the Final Four while Burks led his to the NIT. But from a skills standpoint, he's quite intriguing and similar. If nothing else, he's an asset and right now, we have a ton of assets for next year's draft if we want to move up. Our pick (assuming we are mediocre), the GS pick (I doubt it will be top 7), and guys like Burks, Jefferson/Millsap, and Harris who may be valuable to some team in a package if we really want to move up and get someone like Barnes or Rivers is quite a bit. And i figured I wouldn't even mention Kanter, Favors, or Hayward though there's them too.
