Burks playing team ball; Lyles not

Sometimes it almost seems like Jazz fans want to complain about players just to complain.
I think this could be said about all fan bases. But it does seem like fans expect every player to be perfect from the moment they arrive in the league.

some of you guys are ridiculous tbh. when trey has a bad game, it's all "he's a bust. should've drafted booker." or when dante has a bad game "he's never going to amount to anything. what a waste." its like, really? they're both basically in their SECOND year of pro basketball. barely 20 and 21 years old. calm down. they'll mature and grow and become wonderful basketball players. give it time.

A lot times it comes from fans who have never attempted anything that requires mastery of any kind, in particular a physical discipline. They have no concept of what it takes to become proficient in anything and assume you either have it or don't. Which simply isn't the case especially at that level.

This basically means that there is a lot of noise. So much noise that it's hard to hear.

Wow that's a really interesting take. I think he has one of the smoothest shots of anybody I have seen his size.

his bricks always look ugly though. Total *clunks*.

But then again so do Hood's sometimes, and he has a great stroke. Hayward's kinda tend to rim out as opposed to the clunks.

I dunno. It's weird how bricks tend to look consistent within a player, but inconsistent between players.

Form doesnt matter, consistency does. He doesnt have a consistent release and you can tell easily by how much his arc differs on his shots.

FORM DOESN'T MATTER AT ALL

Hood's shot relies heavily on his legs, which is probably the source of his shot inconsistency. Hayward, Johnson, and Hill all have more compact 1 motion releases on their 3 pt shots.

I was noticing Alec passing up shots he could've taken to move the ball to a more open man, almost to a fault. I think he is working hard to break from his natural inclination to just be a scorer. I also noticed Lyles taking shots when there were guys open with better shots.

I noticed the exact same thing. Every single player on the roster makes the pass to the corner for wide open 3, while Lyles misses that pass repeatedly. I don't know if it's because he doesn't see it, or he thinks him attacking is better option.

He has average, at best, playmaking vision. Disappointing too because above all else he was billed as a playmaker. Maybe the game is just too fast for him ATM.

That's because, I think, he often rushes his shot. But he has such great range and a high release so that he has no trouble getting it off. I think he just needs to relax and take his time with it, and if he has to rush then to move the ball or put it on the floor.

His shot is very inconsistent and he is figuring things out but don't give up him because... Good Gawd dat balance beam doe.

You're seeing what you want to see. His assists/36 mins is a career low (1.7) and about half his career average (3.0), while his shots/36 is right on his career average (13.2). He's actually shooting just as much as ever, but passing to the open man far *less*.

Breaking down his shooting, his three-point attempts/36 are a career-high (4.5) while shooting a career-low percentage (30%). He's barely better at shooting 3s than the much-maligned Exum, and they both jack up 3s at the same rate per 36 (4.5).

Now to be fair, he is shooting a career-high percentage overall, and is way, way better on his two-point shots. He hovered around the 40% mark inside the arc over the past two (short) seasons, and has never been above 48% in any season, but this year he is at 55%. Perhaps it would have been more accurate to say he is taking better shots, rather than claiming he is passing them up. But he is still the same score-first Alec, maybe even more so, but at least is taking better shots.

I also noticed Lyles taking shots when there were guys open with better shots.
A very subjective assessment, "better shots". But still accurate - he is the worst shooter inside the arc out of everyone on the team, making only 44% of his two-point shots. His 33% rate outside the arc is also uninspiring. So yeah, pretty much everyone on the team is a better shooting option than Lyles.

Question. Does number of assists always correlate with willingness to pass? Can one pass the ball and not pick up an assist from the pass?

I dont think we should give up on him yet.

I'm just souring on his play of late. Whens hes adding offense it really hides his lack of rebounding, and defense.
When he's clanking shot after shot its hard to justify him being out there.

I hope he develops a back to the basket game, which I see him working on. I just wish he would hit those wide open 3 point shots consistently.
I'm seeing Bolomboy knocking those down game after game, and he plays defense.

Bolomboy plays starter minutes and gets rhythm against scrubs. Judging by how many points the stars give up, his defense isn't that good.
