Burying the hatchet with Roger

Didn't Matthews just get the full Midlevel?

I liked Raja the first stint but disliked him the 2nd stint because he pretty much replaced Matthews. Not matching on Matthews was one of our worst decisions ever.

No, refusing to negotiate with our own free agents and telling them to go find an offer was one of our worst decisions. Not just that, but Millsap, and someone else who escapes my mind. Then in DL’s first summer he did it to Hayward by following KOC’s lead. And, currently, we have Exum’s 3 years / $30M to show for it because DL is still traumatized by his Hayward experience.

Matthews was an UFA. There was no “matching”. He got his offer from Portland and signed the deal. There was a rumor that his agent gave him bad info on what the Jazz were willing to pay him.

Sorry bigb
I had to remove my like from your post and transfer it to infection.

Matthews deal would have cost the Jazz $9.1M plus whatever tax they would have to pay because they would have been in the tax after filling out their roster. The consensus opinion at the time of his signing was Portland overpaid by a lot. Bad decision in hindsight, but understandable.

As for Hayward, it was rumored the Jazz made him the same offer they gave to Favors. Bump a previous thread and most were valuing Hayward between $9-$11m. Imagine if Lindsey had given Hayward a max deal right away. This board would have called Lindsey a horrible GM for not seeing what the market was going to offer. Even me, the biggest DL critic on the board, think Lindsey did the right thing. Hayward was coming off a bad season. He didn't think, like all of us, that Gordon was worth the max.

The whole Matthews story is interesting. He probably would not have made the team his rookie year if CJ Miles hadn't got hurt in training camp. He had an opportunity and ran with it.

My memory is hazy but I think he played for the rookie minimum his 1st year, but it was a one year deal. I think the current CBA provides for two year deals but all unguaranteed unless you are a first round pick.
