So I am sure that all of you are aware of the law that CA passed prohibiting state officials and law enforcement from cooperating with ICE and federal immigration agencies.

Well the Federal government has taken CA to court over the law as they say it violates federal law and the constitution.

Now there is a new wrinkle in the case. Some CA towns are now rejecting the stats Sanctuary law and voting to "opt out". Los Alamitos has already done so and directed the city attorney to write an "amicus brief" to be entered on the federal governments side in their lawsuit against the state of CA. Other towns are looking at following their lead. Like Huntington Beach, Buena Park and Aliso Viejo.

But some towns are coming out against the actions by the above towns. Like Long Beach and the state authorities are threatening to sue these towns.

I find it to be quite interesting. What are you thoughts on the issue? Both from a personal and legal standpoint.

A neighboring state should sue the CA towns that are suing the other CA towns that are opting out of the State of CA's law that is being challenged by the Federal government.

There is current case law in largely in the Federal Government's favor. The parts of the law that conflict with Federal law will be struck down, and parts that don't will survive.

5 years ago, you would have seen conservatives supporting a general position of state's rights against expansive federal laws, and liberals opposing that. Now the scripts are flipped.

I don't know how I feel about the CA law in particular. An order to not cooperate seems extreme, as opposed to permission to not cooperate.

I tend to agree that the CA law will be struck down. At least in part.

Another interesting domino of this is that this is helping fuel a growing secession movement within CA. Both CA breaking off from the US (won't happen, civil war anyone) and another to split CA in two and the conservative portions forming a 51st state called New California.

I have an acquaintance who a few years ago was involved in trying to split California into two states, with northern California being called Jefferson. Apparently went nowhere.
