So here is a hypothetical (for everyone, not aimed at dal necessarily)...

LeBron James decides that he will follow the feelings he has had since he was 2 and live publicly as a woman. He feels far more comfortable in woman's body. He starts taking hormones and basically does exactly what Jenner did, complete with cover photo and 1 hour special on ESPN. Then he publicly states he is no longer comfortable being in a men's locker room. He wants to play in the WNBA with his (now her) "own kind".

Is it allowed? Why or why not?

1) flawed example-- women are allowed to play in the NBA (the Jazz even drafted one)
2) for the sake of argument-- umm, yes? Not sure why this would be problematic given the precedent set by the IOC. Oh noes, line-blurring!! Everything must be black and white in this world!

What is funny about your sarcastic comment at the end (the whole oh noes thing) is that I agree that people can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't interfere with anyone else's rights. So be a woman if you want, or a goat, or a banana. I see no problem with LBJ playing in the WNBA (so why not drop the W and just let women play in the D league or something?) or women in the NBA, no biggie. But as long as I disagree with you in some way you feel the need to denigrate me until I do agree. That is the new ultra-liberal way though: you can have your own thoughts as long as they are the same as mine, otherwise I need to vilify you until you get in line. So carry on.

Lol. Are you serious? Do you think there's a chance in hell that LeBrona would not make the team? Even if the hormones somehow transformed her into the worst basketball player in the world (which would not happen) the owners would be clamoring to make her the highest paid player on the team because they would pull in the revenue needed to pay that salary many, many times over.

I'm not sure how Jenner's decisions meet even the most basic definition of "courage". He had the support of his family; the exposure, fame, and money of reality television; and an entire edition of Vanity Fair dedicated almost exclusively to "Caitlyn". He overcame no illness, defied no great odds, lost nothing in exchange for his achievement (which was purely personal), and made nobody's life better. He's not even a courageous individual among other transsexuals, who often sacrifice so much more to do exactly what he did, much less a hero who transcended sports to inspire others. With all respect to his right to choose his identity, the ESPY Foundation just represented itself as pure tabloid, using a Hollywood headline for promotional purposes. What a disappointment.

I'm a woman trapped inside of a woman's body. Reaction: Celebration of courage. (Btw, I actually like Jenner and enjoyed ESPN's segment on her.)

I'm a developing baby and future child, son, daughter, brother, sister, husband, wife, etc but I'm trapped in my mother's body. Reaction: Well, good thing you're trapped there so we can decide if you live or we murder you.

Btw, those that say abortion isn't murder, you're kidding yourself. Yes, it's legal, but it's slaughtering and butchering life in its earliest process. It's disgusting and psychotic.

If what Jenner did doesn't meet the basic definition of courage then you are ignorant of what the definition of courage is and proving the point of what transgender people struggle with.

Dude, just ignore it. I was gonna dive in & point out how it is courageous, but they'll just dismiss it. They can't understand, mostly because they've never really had anyone close to them who is transgender. They'd be singing a different tune if that was the case. That's what it stems from. None have bothered watching the video, and none have bothered ever considering the plights of someone who is transgender (especially in person).

I'd normally agree with you but in Jenner's case I believe it was motivated by money and fame. It is how that family is run. So was it courageous? Sure but it's tainted in my eyes in this one case by greed.

2) Those are a lot of assumptions piled into one post about someone you know nothing about, Dal. I genuinely like you, and I generally enjoy reading what you have to say, but you're flat wrong about me if you think what I said above was written from a place of ignorance. I am not only very close to someone who is transgender, I was there alongside them-- in full support-- every step of the way. I am INTIMATELY familiar with what you characterize as "the plights" of individuals making that transition. How about you...?

Jenner has certainly made some big decisions for himself, and I do not deny that they were difficult decisions. As I already stated, however, his transgender journey didn't even approach the level of courage required by most individuals who make those choices. I have no hate for Jenner, and I'm happy for Bruce that Caitlyn has found her place in life. But Jenner's story is not deserving of this award, considering what it represents and the countless others who better honor the memory of Arthur Ashe. It is exploitation by the ESPY Foundation of a headline, for publicity, and it is shameful. Most transgenders, I can assure you, would agree.

Of course, if you prefer, you can ask my sister, who finds the entire thing insulting...

It's hard to take your professed care for the transgender community seriously when you constantly refer to Caitlyn as "him"-- just a pro-tip. That's basically step 1 of allying yourself with the trans community. Regardless of the reasons of why you think Jenner did it, referring to her as 'him' is basically the most disrespectful thing you could do not only to her identity, but to the identity of the group as a whole
