Can Rubio Improve His Shooting?

How good would it look on the Jazz and its staff if Rubio turns into a good shooter.

Would it make more players want to come here to improve?

Part of me wonders if the Rubio trade was just to appease Hayward and have the PG spot solidified by 7/1. If we knew he was leaving, would we still have made that deal?

I know we had "use it or lose it" cap room that was set to expire. But now we have a logjam at PG with two young guys (Exum, Mitchell) who both look like capable NBA point guards that will struggle to get minutes at that spot.

The Exum case is particularly interesting (problematic?) given that he's entering a contract season. If his PT is choppy and he gets spot minutes at both the 1 and 2, he could be difficult to accurately value on the FA market. Fingers crossed this results in us signing him to a favorable deal and he explodes down the road a la Steph Curry.

I think Rubio is an even better trade with Hayward gone. Rubio doesn't seem to play well off the ball but he does play really well on ball and make the team better around him.

Also Exum can get all the backup PG minutes.

Mitchell is a 2, so he will be fighting with Burks for those backup sg minutes. There is no reason to clear room for rookies to play, let them earn their time. Hopefully Mitchell can.

I guess that's where we disagree - I think Donovan's future/best position is PG. He's got all the tools offensively, and would be an absolute terror as an on-ball defender with his size, strength and length.

Fair enough. I don't see the PG in him. He looks like a slasher and a shooter, who can kick the ball out. He looks like a SG, plays like one and I think will be his best position. I do see him playing some PG but just occasionally kind of like Wade. I was concerned about his defense on bigger guys until watching summer league. I now think defensively his best spot is also sg.

I want to see Exum and Mitchell run a dual PG system. Have both bringing up the ball and attacking/passing.

You know what? I don't care. I'm just going to assume that his recent shooting uptick is exponential, and that playing with Gobert, Mitchell, and Ingles is going to push his assist numbers even further.

The Jazz are going to be so much more fun next year.
