What's new

Celtics at Jazz, 1/26/2015 7:15PM MT Game Thread

I'm starting to fear that Exum was a wasted pick. I wonder how the draft would've turned out for him if he had worked out with more than just the Bucks/Sixers/Magic or if he had gone to college for a year.

Feel free to talk me out of this train of thought.

The only thing I worry about with him right now is his aggression, but he's been getting better with that lately. If he still looks timid and hesitant to attack next year at half-season, I'd start worrying...

I see a long and quick PG with great court vision and a lot of tenacity on the defensive end. Worst case scenario is a pass first PG who plays good D and can give you 10 pts 10 ast a few rebounds a game. So I doubt it will be a wasted pick, but he might not live up to the hype. On the other hand, as he gets stronger and more comfortable with the game, he might become good at attacking the rim. He will most definitely get stronger, and according to everyone, he has nice work ethic and is eager to learn and improve. If he manages to learn to take advantage of his length and speed to get to the rim and draw fouls, then he will be an awesome PG.

But time will tell.

That GIF is destroying my computer for some reason! Took me a couple of minutes just to be able to type this.

On Celtics forums they are talking about how much Exum sucks and how glad they are to have drafted Smart. We'll see in a couple of years you fools!

i think Smart is real close to what he'll be long term. Serviceable & acceptable but that's his ceiling. They can keep him. More than confident the difference between the two will grow more apparent the next 2-3 years.

Yah, I have a similar feeling for Smart. I think he can possibly become a better shooting Tony Allen. He will be a monster defensively, but I don't see the potential in offense. He doesn't have quick first step and he doesn't have good hesitation moves... with him everything is straight line offense. I think Dante has much higher ceiling offensively, but his defense will probably never get to the level of Smart's defense.

The thing I worry about is that he's shooting 32% from downtown on the season (despite roughly none of those shots being remotely contested), and almost refuses to shoot from mid-range - which is actually probably good because he's shooting 13.8% on 10+ foot 2-pointers. 62% from the line, as well. I also worry about his poor ball-handling and the fact that he hasn't demonstrated any sort of ability to explode to the basket (which was supposed to be his main strength). Possibly the most damning of all is that he hasn't shown much (if any) improvement between summer league and today.

Somebody please talk me out of this doubt.

Very good post. I didn't see this until after my post - that gif destroyed my browser.

His handle needs work... I think 32% 3p shooting is OK and a good starting point. I was expecting worse. But I think his burst of speed is undeniable. He just doesn't use it. There was an explosion to the rim he showed against Jrue Holiday, who's one of the quicker PGs in the league. He's had several instances like that. He had one against the Nuggets too. The thing is... he just doesn't seem to have the mindset of "go out and attack the rim" right now. Everytime he gets in the paint or close to the paint he's looking to pass. I actually think this harms both his scoring around the rim and his passing, since opponents are now not even helping on him when he penetrates and are just sticking with their own man for the most part.

The thing that should really excite you is his speed and that even now he has shown ability to blow by people. The other thing that should excite you is that he sees the floor. I don't think I've seen him miss an open man on the perimeter on his drives. He's long and he sees the floor really well and swing his passes with great precision for most part...

If he develops some finishing around the rim that would open up his game a lot... defenders will start helping on him and that would leave open people around the rim(Favors, Gobert).

KD .. i suggest you stop being a short-sighted ball of anxiety. Once he fills out a little and gets confident his game will leap forward.

btw why is gobert only playing 26 min ?? i'm starting to think they really aren't necessarily trying to win games at this stage, perhaps showcasing Kanter ...??

Kanter lost us the game with that charge smh
At least he was trying to make the right pass though (to an open ingles in the corner)

Some of my thoughts.....

I wish that all the bigs minutes went to favors, kanter, and gobert.

In the first half trey dribbled way too much and was very indecisive.

The crowd loved rudy and even got some rudy chants going.

I was yelling at quin to get Hayward in the game early in the 4th..... Hayward should have played 40+ minutes tonight. When Hayward is out we have too many passive, indecisive, and just plain bad offensive wing players in the game. This is when we really miss Burks. At least he would be aggressive and put pressure on the defense and get some free throws, if nothing else.

The best part of the game crowd wise was when ingles was pestering turner. Crowd was going ape**** for ingles and even gave him a half standing ovation when he went to the bench. Ingles is physical and can play bigger or smaller in different situations. He was boxing bigger players out nicely tonight.

Zeller did not fear the stifle tower. Rudy couldn't seem to even get his hands up to challenge alot of zellers shots.

Sullinger is fat

I was getting into it a little with a Boston fan (there were alot of them) and at the end of the game I went down to him and said congratulations on your team hurting thier lottery chances...... our tank is stronger than yours.

So his worse case scenario would make him the second best assist man in the NBA? Interesting. I haven't given up, but dude acts like a little bitch out there. He may not have what it takes mentally to make it in this league. I'll give him time though. But even if he hit his ceiling he probably wouldn't average 10 APG, almost no one does.

Amen. He's been playing better as of late

You were right though that the charge was a big play in the game and helped to decide the outcome
