Central tank command : the official thread

Tanking is surely the only logical option?

I mean, sure, if anyone in the Jazz FO is daft enough to think Rubio is the future, then keep playing him.
But they should move him as a number #1 priority in operation tank.

I am keen to see Favors be a full time center over the next month.
Keep playing Mitchell a ton and Hood. Look to shop Hood at some point or make a decision if he is part of the future.

Play Burks a ton etc...

This year is about making sure the Jazz know who they want to be moving into the next 5 years.

Yes, play them not to trade. Better to have both burks and hood going forward. Hood is making some strides by being consistent. We have to match any offer. He is part of the core and great punch from the bench.
We also should play a ton for alec not to trade him. His 10mils is a bargain now days.

We are only 1 game below playoffs. Nobody is tanking. Rudy will be back soon and we will go on nice winning streak.

Anfernee Simons. Remember that name. If our tank fails, he's a name to watch. The more highlights I watch of him the more I like him. + he's friends with Mitchell... so... hope he declares for the draft.

I don't think we have the juice to really tank like we need to... we end up somewhere between 9-14... may even make the 8 seed between the injuries the Clips and Grizzlies are dealing with.

We would need to trade Favs like soon... can't trade Thabo until 12/15 and JJ really couldn't be moved until healthy.

My prediction is it won't be a real tank, but that we move Favs when a deal comes along and actually take on money for next year to get a first rounder. We may move Thabo/JJ at the deadline, but it likely only nets seconds and expirings.

I think we will be stuck in the middle... hopefully DL can pull another rabbit out the hat in the draft.

Yeah, this has been my worry from the very start - you cannot really do a tank when you fill your roster with competent depth. We will just win games based on depth if nothing else. The good thing for the tank is that we have a murderer's row coming in Dec and that might actually sway the opinion of DL towards tanking. at 11-27 or 10-28 he will need to think about selling off the pieces that don't fit in the long-term plans and yet win you games today.

Agree. I worry we go slightly better than 500 once Gobert is back and end up with 32-34 wins. If teams like the Clips, Grizzlies, Pelicans get a jump on the tank the extra few wins will push us into 10ish catergory. If we go on a win streak we will be right in no man's land.

I wouldn't mind us standing pat if we really had cap space coming, but we don't have meaningful space unless we make a move to offload salary next year. I'd like us to pick one side or the other that way... either take on salary for next year and get a first or move AB or Ricky and clear space. I just think moves have to be made... now would be a good time to make them and really start the tank... we just don't have it in us though.

I think we have also figured out that playing a small ball 4 who can shoot (jerebko, Thabo) cures a lot of the offensive woes and that when Rudy gets back he will take care of a lot of the defensive issues we are having.

December is ugly... if losses pile up maybe our management is able to stomach a tear down. We will see in about a month.

JAzz assets that should be looked at being moved my the daeline

Joe Johnson - He is the kind of player that a play off team would love on their roster. He has experience and is a very competent scorer. Jazz should look at a playoff team to offer a second rounder for him or include his salary in a larger salary dump.

Derrick Favors - It hurts me to even type this but I do not see him back next year and he is worth a first round pick to the right team. I think with Gobert out it has proved that he is a very good center in the current NBA. There are a few team that could use a very good center especially a team competing now. (Hello Bucks)

Rubio is almost worthless right now. to many turn overs and he cant shoot it. I am afraid they Jazz are stuck with him but if they could.

Rodney Hood- They need to decide what they want to do with him. They own his restrictive rights this summer and could just let the market dictate what he is worth or they could find a team now that would be willing to offer a first or more for him. (Aaron Gordon maybe)

Thabo Sefelosha - is the perfect bench guy for a playoff team. He is decent at the 3 ball and plays great defense. Jazz should look for a play off team looking to give a second rounder for some bench help. Hopefully an earleir second rounder.

Epke Udoh - one of my new favorite players but if he could bring in Young assets or draft picks to a team that needs playoff depth they Jazz would have to consider it.

Burks - is a tough one because on the right team he could be a stud player but on the Jazz not so much. Because of the year remaining he does nto have as much value, but if he could be moved for assets then do it.

I expect Favors and burks to be moved. It makes sense for bucks to trade for favors but what will they give up? I wish we could get parker somehow, but that will most likely not happen.

Good, productive conversation here.

If you research around the league, these are the only expiring contracts over $10 million:
Boogie Cousins
Chris Paul
Tony Parker
Brook Lopez
K Caldwell Pope
Zach Randolph
Greg Monroe
JJ Redick
Amir Johnson

That's it not counting our Favors and JoeJ. Its crazy. There arent many salary dump opportunities. We have a much better chance of getting an asset by taking a salary than using an asset to take a liability like Burks or Rubio.

This is my thought basically... I think there are a number of precarious cap situations next year and more teams willing to give assets to unload salary than there are teams willing to take salary back.

What would it cost us to offload Burks (that is what we'd have to do to create space)? A first... maybe two seconds?

I'd rather be on the other side of that equation and wait until 2019 to have major space. Teams in positions that will need to move salary:

- Denver - They want to extend Jokic this summer... will be around 135M if everyone opts in and that is without Barton.
- Milwaukee - If Parker gets a max offer and I think he will... they will be well over the tax if they match.
- Lakers - need to dump salary if they get a big FA.
- OKC - Depending on how the PG FA goes.
- NO - Keeping Boogie with that squad gets spendy.
- Porty - How much Luxury Tax will they pay to keep a middling team together?
- LAC - if they keep DeAndre.
- Wizards - They gonna pay repeaters tax next year?
- CHA - Inching towards the tax and going nowhere.
- Det - Likely need to clear salary if they are going to retain Bradley.
- Miami - Going to be in trouble with the tax because of how Tyler Johnson's contract is structured.

Lots of sellers... go get picks or good prospects for expirings... it is the best use of our cap space next year and helps the tank.
