In his new mock draft he has Orlando drafting Vonleh at 4 with the Magic thinking they can still get a quality PG at #12.
Makes no sense.
I take offense to Exum not working out for Utah. Jazz are just one spot out of the #4 and have a history of trading up. F (as in "forget') Exum. Pick Vonleh or Gordon.
If the guy thinks he is going top-4 then why workout for the #5 team?
He is in discussion to go as high as #2.
If I was Magic I would do the exact same.
Oladipo (12th pick in the draft)
Afflalo
Harkless (Shot 38% from 3) -Tobias Harris
Vonleh - Tobias Harris
Vucevic
They could then trade Afflalo for more picks or a veteran PG or SF and move Oladipo to SG.
They have a great young coach in Vaughn who learned under Pop.
But more importantly they have "Twin Towers" with Vonleh and Vucevic which allows them to be serious players down low on both sides of the ball. While also being able to go small with Harris when needed.
The *insert NBA team here* have a history of drafting players that never worked out for them. Add Exum to the list.
The Magic cleared out Glen Davis off the roster just so they could regularly start Tobias, and give Andrew Nicholson some burn too. Seeing as Smart, Vonleh, and Exum are all on a similar tier in terms of ceilings (with Exum arguably the highest), I'd imagine they would err on the side of roster need.
Nicholson and Tobias do not have the same ceiling as those 3 players.
Harris can easily get just as much playing time playing both positions. So no problem there. Andrew Nicholson is a scrub and always will be.
I repeat, they are very high on Tobias-- also, Tobias plays way better at the 4. They tried him at the 3 for a chunk of the season, before deciding that he was a lot better off as a 4 instead. Going BPA obviously makes sense (aka why I want the Jazz to draft Vonleh instead of Gordon) but if the ceiling of two potential draftees is a wash, then you err on the side of roster need.
