Chances of last place building a Dynasty?

Seattle Supersonics drafted Kevin Durant with the #2 pick.
The Sonics finished with a 20-62 record.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Westbrook #4 and Ibaka #24.
The Thunder finished with a 23-59 record.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Harden with the #3 pick.
The Thunder finished with a 50-32 record and made the playoffs at #8.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Eric Bledsoe with the #18 pick.
The Thunder finished with a 55-27 record and made the playoffs at #4.

Now:

Derrick Favors got extended for 4 years.
We are looking to do the same for Hayward.

Should we expect to see a more aggressive rise than that of the Thunder?
Will our team be a contender before the tail end of the extensions?

Throw in Jeff Green too. OKC had better choices when they drafted. Who is to say they would have taken Durrant if they had the first pick? No one thought Harden would be as good as he has become. Besides they blew it when they brought in Perkins which resulted in Harden leaving (signing Ibaka also contributed to it). I didn't know they drafted Bledsoe what did they get for him when he was traded to LA? Ibaka was a good pick (maybe Gobert is our Ibaka).

Jazz picked Hayward 9th, NJ picked Favors third and Kanter was picked third. Each of the drafts the Jazz have had high picks the drafts were thought to be weak or average as best. OKC got lucky because Portland picked Oden. Durrant fell in their lap. Westbrook turned a lot of heads during the combine but he wasn't thought as a superstar coming out of college. He is better than most people predicted. So yes OKC hit homer runs but they were lucky too.

Of course now the Jazz have an opportunity in the deepest draft in a decade to get a projected superstar. They need to hit home runs on both picks in order to return to glory. However, they also need to have Favors play better than he has and they need to keep Hayward and Kanter. Besides they are going to need even more luck than OKC since they won't be hand wrapped a superstar like Durrant.

Who knows if the young guys will be anything more than good players but people who expect it after 6 games need to have their heads examined. A lot has to go right in order for the Jazz to be contenders. At least in the next few years we will be hoping they will be but with last years roster there was no chance. Remember Stockton and Malone didn't get to the finals until over a decade of trying.

I am trying to look ahead. Honestly, I cannot remember seeing a situation where one draft pick turned the same team from zeros to heroes.

the nuggets went from 17 wins (2002) to 43 wins (2003) after drafting carmelo. (+26 wins)
the rockets went from 28 wins (2001) to 43 wins (2002) after drafting yao. (+15 wins)
the heat went from 25 wins (2002) to 42 wins (2003) after drafting wade. (+17 wins)
the spurs went from 20 wins (1996) to 56 wins (1997) after drafting duncan. (+36 wins)
the jazz went from 26 wins (2004) to 41 wins (2005) after drafting deron. (+15 wins)
the nets went from 26 wins (1996) to 43 wins (1997) after drafting van horn. (+17 wins)

the list goes on and on

The Celtics went from last place to a championship in 2007/08. They brought in veteran All Stars. It'll take the Jazz 2 or 3 years to mature, but they might well have the pieces.

Are the same guy that recently said the Jazz would make the playoffs this year, and have a hard time believing we make the playoffs next year based on what I have seen so far this year.

Nope
I said 24 wins after the schedule was released(27 before but I couldn't find the post)

I'm also the guy that started this thread(which many people thought was crazy talk)

Not my first time watching the NBA, but maybe your question was not an honest one. Some of those rosters I am familiar with. Some I need to look up (but I am sure you did not know those exact stats off the top of your head either).

Denver Nuggets case: +Melo, +Dre Miller +Voshon Lenard +Marcus Camby playing 42 more games.
Houston Rockets case: Francis played 24 more games in 2002 vs 2001.
Miami Heat case: +Eddie Jones playing 34 more games +Wade +Odom
San Antonio Spurs case: This one is more memorable. The Twin Towers. The Admiral went down early in the season and played 6 games. Duncan got drafted the next year.
Jazz: Would you say Deron was a big part of that bounce? He started 47 games and avg 10 points and 4 assists.

I am sure the list goes on and on and we will see it was never about adding one rookie. Michael Jordan who avg 28ppg as a rookie only got an +11 bounce for the Bulls. They made the playoffs and lost in the first round. No matter who we draft next year, if we are the worst team this year there will still be a lot of work to be done in order to be contenders again. We will need to lure good free agents as well.

the point is clear however, that arguably more so than in any other professional sport, one guy can make a tremendous difference. we are all banking on that guy to be from the draft. if we get a franchise player, i sincerely expect a +15-20 win increase next year.

We have the pieces to be big players in both the draft and free agency, with trades and cap space. We could see a completely different roster next season and there is no reason we couldn't pull a Celtics-type move, bring in some strong talent on the cusp, and ride them and a strong draft to a (or multiple) title(s).
