Chicago Draft Combine 2011

Pre Draft combine started yesterday. I think the measurements happened yesterday and should be made available on the internet. The meassurments can really impact the projected draft postion of players.

The interviews also started yesterday. Each team gets to interview 18 players (anyone know if the jazz get more since they have to 1st round picks?) The teams submit lists of players they'd like to interview and the NBA schedules according to who the NBA thinks will be available at the teams draft position.

Today, players will do speed, strength and agility drills. There is also the maximum vertical leap, vertical reach and other drills. They can be watched on ESPN U or ESPN3 on the internet. Teams will continue thier interviews this evening.

A list of the players is available here or here , but I read somewhere this morning that Reggie Jackson from BC isn't there.

Draft Express is there and has twitter updates, these are from last night:
  • Tomorrow morning. It'll be short and sweet. RT @CanEyeBall: When do the drills start at the Combine?
  • Every NBA team has 3-4 people interviewing the prospects. RT @Mac_Diego: Is it just GMs, or does each team have a group of representatives?
  • Pretty crazy here at the Westin in Chicago right now. NBA teams starting their player interviews. Every team gets 18 over the next 3 days.

Go Jazz

The thing that kills me about this situation is that these guys are essentially applying for jobs that pay in the millions. I wonder what would happen if I applied for a job (that pays in the millions, of course) and told the employer that I wouldn't do certain portions of the interview or perhaps refused to share my resume. Oh yeah, I know what would happen.

I can't wait for Kanter to skip the first year of his pro career, too.

Get the **** out there Enes!!!!!

This is nothing new. These 'kids' are being advised by agents, coaches, and others ... I'm certain they have all have full confidence to go through all the testing, but are heeding advice of their 'managers.'

The combine has become a joke because top players always skip work outs. I wish they made it mandatory for players to be eligible for the draft must participate in the combine.

At least Enes is planning on the athletic testing (could change), but Irving won't even do that.

Umm wrong.

ESPN's Chad Ford is reporting that Kyrie Irving, Derrick Williams, Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, Tristan Thompson, Alec Burks and possibly Enes Kanter and Kawhi Leonard will skip the athletic portions of the Combine.

Get off Kanter worship altar and read the news. They are both rumored to not doing the athletic testing.

Will do. Hey I just got done reading the news, and what do you know, Chad Ford:

Just got word Enes Kanter will be doing drills at combine tomorrow. He should be the main attraction.

Thanks for the tip.

It always depends on who has the leverage. Lots of jobs that pay in the millions require the employer to woo the applicant. The top guys in this draft have more to lose than to gain doing a shuttle run or lifting a weight bar up and down. Their 'resumes' are game tape.

And by the way, the report that you read, if the person who re-reported right would have got right, was that all these players were skipping the drills (which it looks like Kanter decided to do), but everyone, but Irving, would do the athletic testing (vert, max vert, bench, etc.)

Since obviously it was his fault that he didn't get to play college ball this year. You'll all see, he's gonna be a very good player. Just watch and wait.

For those of you who don't get it Irving and Kanter don't have anything to gain and millions to lose it they participate and have a bad showing.

You're right. I don't get it. As Klay Thompson just pointed out with regards to players skipping the workout, "what do you have to be afraid of? It's just basketball."

You have to be afraid of playing like Tim Duncan in summer ball when you normally play like Tim Duncan in the NBA.

I can understand how the whole procedure is unfair to the players. You have a college/ HS career that teams can study as much as they like, but a good player who performs badly at the combine can hurt his position (thus lose a bunch of money).
