Construction on the Brightline West high-speed rail between Rancho Cucamonga and Las Vegas is starting. It was supposed to be LA to Vegas, but that was too expensive. It is budgeted to cost $12 billion dollars and take 4 years to construct. Biden has already allocated $6.5 billion of taxpayer money to the project.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say they won’t complete the 218-mile system in 4 years. There was a similar proposal for high speed rail between LA and San Francisco. The numbers were similar, but then they cut out LA because it was too expensive and it became Bakersfield to San Francisco. After working on it for 9 years and burning through $11.3 billion dollars, they’ve built 1,600 feet of the line. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from one end to the other.

California is now claiming the Bakersfield to San Francisco high speed rail will cost over $100 billion to complete. They were lying in the beginning. They are lying now. Everyone knows it.


But now we have the promise of Brightline West linking San Bernardino County to Las Vegas for only $12 billion dollars!

 
We Americans are dumb for not having a comprehensive commuter rail system across the lower 48.

We absolutely dropped the ball on this. Cars are not the answer. There will never be enough lanes because more lanes simply encourages more people to drive on that road, which eventually means we need more lanes.

What is dumb is a ****ing guy who thinks his sexuality is tied to owning a truck so he commutes along the freeway, alone, in his F250 for his 1hr+ drive because to be able to afford the truck he moved far outside the city. Same guy hates the city because of all the weirdos there and how hard it is for him to maneuver his big *** truck through the city when he actually wants to do something besides sit on his porch and look at his 1/2 acre of lawn that he spends most of his free time taking care of. He works in the city, because that's where the jobs are, he go into the city for entertainment and dining, because that's where that stuff is, but he complains constantly about hating the city and everyone in it. That's what's dumb.
 
I used to live in California and my closest relative was my sister in Vegas. I remember our first trip coming back on a Sunday night with an infant crying for the extra 4 hours it took us to get home. We never made that mistake again. I can definitely say that rail would get a ton of use.

I spent a week in China in October and traveled all over on high speed rail trains. It was a nice alternative to airplanes and very convenient.

I can't comment on the finances and economy of it all, but based on my experience it seems worth the investment.
 
Try Melbourne, what used to be consistently ranked the world’s most liveable city. We could never get our **** together to build a rail line all of 19 km from the airport to the CBD. So we have only a congested constipated freeway as the mode of transport from the busy airport to the city.

Been to Japan recently where you could absolutely live without a car almost anywhere you lived. Fabulous rail system
 
Try Melbourne, what used to be consistently ranked the world’s most liveable city. We could never get our **** together to build a rail line all of 19 km from the airport to the CBD. So we have only a congested constipated freeway as the mode of transport from the busy airport to the city.
Where I live in San Diego, we can and do build light rail to get around. We even have light rail going to the airport, but it doesn't stop there. Our airport has been in its ocean-front location for a long time and the city has grown around it. It is some of the most valuable real estate in the city and developers desperately want the land it is on. When our city started building out our light rail system, developers made political contributions to those on the planning committee to make it so the system could not serve to bring people to and from the airport. The thinking was that if they built rails to the terminals that the airport would never move, so instead the rails run along the back side of the airport, on the opposite side of the runways from where the terminals are.

It is heavy high speed rail that is the never completed boondoggle. I don't mind light rail but even the best light rail system in the world is no excuse not to build excellent roadways for the geographic size of the city I live in. San Diego is over 90km from top to bottom and 40-50km east to west. We have over 3 million people, but population doesn't have the density to support rail service to everyone. Good roads and cars are how it gets done. From where I live, I can get nearly anywhere in less than 30 minutes, but we drive 80mph or 130km/h.

I lived in SD for about 6 years.

That airport location is insane. When the city finally cashes in on that land it'll be SD 2.0.

To be honest, if they could get Coronado back from the Navy at the same time, possibly even part of 32nd street, whoa. Look out L.A.!
