CJ Miles Breakout Season (take 4)

"I put in the work so … no reason not to be confident," Miles said. "(I've) been doing everything all summer, put my myself in position where any situation I'll have some type of success in it, so there shouldn't be any issue with that because I've been working."

I hate quotes like this for so many reasons.

He has a lofty vision for his career résumé.

Told by a reporter that his agent has All-Star aspirations for Miles, the affable young man confirmed he shares that elite-player vision.

"I believe that. I believe I have the skills and opportunity with the guys we have here and the way that we can play that I can do that," Miles said. "I put in the time; that's what I'm working for. That's my ideal goal to be that.

"To be All-Star," he added, "that's what everybody comes into the league trying to do."

And this, his goal should be to do whatever he can to make himself and his teammates better and to make the playoffs. His ideal goal is to be an All-Star just proves his selfish mentality.

I can't really knock the guy this off-season. He has dropped 15-20 lbs, that is not an easy thing to do. I don't deny the statements that he is putting work in. I never have. I just hope his mental game has come to play.

His biggest problem is basketball IQ and confidence. He will miss couple easy shots at the start of the game and then you know he is done for the night. If he will learn how to read game better and not rush jumpers - he has all the skill set to become dominant wing ( at least on offense). I wish he would drive more and get to FT line then settle for jumpers. He is still young so there is still hope for him.

Last season(s), heavy: i want to be bulkier so i can finish stronger around the rim.

This season, leaner: "Being lighter and stronger allows me to attack the basket better as far as working the nets," Miles said.

If he really got quicker AND stronger, good for him but i highly doubt it.
Putting more emphasis on his all around game can do him no harm, he should forget to be a (pure) jump shooter.

Another reason for him to get lighter could be that he wants his minutes if Millsap turns out to be decent as SF. With Millsap and possibly Hayward at SF, Miles only to chance to get good minutes is at SG.

My prediction for CJ this season. 20% great games, 40% below-average games, and 20% facepalms.

After many months of spite and regret that we seemed to be stuck with Miles given the dearth of SFs, I'm ready to give him one more chance. Anything less than 15ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3 apg on at least 45% from two and at least 36% from three is a failure. It's now or never Homes.

He will not score 15 points per game. Not with Jefferson, Favors, Millsap, Harris, Burks sand Heyward scoring about 75-80 combined and another group in Bell, Kanter, Okur, Watson, and Evans who may score another 15 or so.

Also, it's Holmes, not Homes.

As in "what did the mexican say to the house? Get off me holmes"

As for CJ. I have always loved his size and skill set and even after how bad he has sucked so far in his career, I still believe he can be a great player. But I do believe this year is his last chance. I think he will finally have a good year. And then once he gets a new contract there is a good chance he will get fat and lazy and start playing like crap again.

I could see Miles averaging 15 points per game. After Jefferson and Millsap, scoring is pretty much up for grabs. I could see Harris, Miles, or Hayward claiming the 3rd scoring role.

I know it sounds lame, but I see this being a good year for Miles. It's the infamous contract year, and he can't get any worse, right?

We're talking about over the course of a season (albeit shortened) right? Then, no.

I'd rather hear about him working on his defense and rebounding. As an emotional player making a big play on the other end of the court could really help his shot.

There were only 3 wing players in the NBA last season who hit those numbers: Monta Ellis, Paul Pierce and Steph Curry.

A classic Sloanism was always "don't play backwards," and that's exactly what CJ's problem is. Misses a couple shots, turns it over then he hangs his head, starts thinking too much, gets hesitant, starts aiming his shots and trying to do too much off-the-dribble.

Last year CJ had alot of pressure to be "the guy" on our 2nd-unit and he just couldn't play up to it. Once his confidence took that blow - that was it. That pressure should be off of him now and he can just go play, like he did in the 09-10 playoffs filling in for AK. He'll always be a streak-shooter and I'm not sure he factors into our longterm plan, but I do expect a bit of a bounceback season (in terms of efficiency).

Is this CJ's last year under contract?
Yes.
