CJ Miles Breakout Season (take 4)

The only thing I ask of Miles is to use his possessions wisely. In fact, that's basically what I ask of every player. Better players can shoot more and crazier shots, but no one is above helping the team win, whether that's deferring or not being scared to take shots.

Miles has been an ever-increasing joke. I was on the pro-Miles train after 2008, and ever since then, all he's done is use possessions less wisely and then from there let it affect his ability to play. If he shoots 5 shots a game but scores 8 points a game, then I'll be elated.

That's not going to happen, though. When the question of whether the Jazz would or should pick up his option, the answer was practically unanimous that he had to go. Whether that was not picking up his option, or trading him once it was. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still there. I was just hoping they could turn that option into another 1st rounder or 2nd. Too late. Oh well.

Completely agree. Sad part is his "ideal" goal is too be an All-Star which means he will take a lot of forced shots most likely.

I would love to see one of our wings become an all-star this year, whether that is Hayward, Burks or CJ. I think CJ is a nice kid.

With the type of season we are bound to have, it would be a miracle to have any of our wings make the all star team. 99% of the time players on losing teams don't make the cut. If anything, I'm thinking Gordon and Alec will just make the rookie - soph game by the skin of their teeth.

He didn't say he was going to be an All-Star this year. He said he just sees himself being an all-star at one point in the future.

Just because he's a polarizing figure, let's not compare him Tebow. Tebow's a leader. A winner. Proven. Miles is none of those things.

Agree that he's not a leader -- & hard to call him a winner. But stats (at least last year) do show, like Tebow, the team plays better when he's in than when he's not.

Not tough to pull off when Bell played like Stevie Wonder and Hayward was a rookie trying to find his way, at first with the aloof Deron Wiliams and then later under a first year head coach and new point guard. Two wings had to be in our best five man units and by default, Miles was one of them.

There were only 3 wing players in the NBA last season who hit those numbers: Monta Ellis, Paul Pierce and Steph Curry.

^I'm surprised by this^, but I'll stand pat. Miles is on my last nerve; he's gotta go big or go away.

Crossfit is a tough workout. I'm sure everyone wants to see him going to the basket more rather than jacking up a jumper as soon as he touches the ball...

I think CJ Miles wasn't used correctly. I think they tried to make him play a "Kyle Korver" type of role where he sits at the three-point line and chuck it up. He is much better when he takes it to the rim and gets out on the break and mix in an occasional jumper. There are very few players who can rely on just their jumper. I think CJ's season depends on how Ty uses him.

Why do so many people still believe in him? I could understand, if all jazz players would get this treatment, but you bash most of them (especially AK, Bell and Fesenko).

- AK could have been hated because he didn't perform on the level his contract might have suggest, but that's not his fault. He is defintely more skilled and smarter than Miles.

- Bell is on the same level as Miles imo. He takes less shots and had better percentages last season, too.

- Fesenko has at least not declined in his development and has some theoretical potential with his size. Also he never got the minutes Miles got so they shouldn't be put in the same category.

Miles' mindset doesn't seem to change, he doesn't see his own flaws. You can't improve if your biggest weakness is your head and you are too arrogant to notice it. I also blame the coaches here. He keeps setting higher goals for himself while getting worse season after season, just ridiculous.

A classic Sloanism was always "don't play backwards," and that's exactly what CJ's problem is. Misses a couple shots, turns it over then he hangs his head, starts thinking too much, gets hesitant, starts aiming his shots and trying to do too much off-the-dribble.

Last year CJ had alot of pressure to be "the guy" on our 2nd-unit and he just couldn't play up to it. Once his confidence took that blow - that was it. That pressure should be off of him now and he can just go play, like he did in the 09-10 playoffs filling in for AK. He'll always be a streak-shooter and I'm not sure he factors into our longterm plan, but I do expect a bit of a bounceback season (in terms of efficiency).

How could he be more confident, he just chucks them up no matter what happens. He said in an interview last season, he forces himself to have a shooter's mentality: just pretend like every shot goes and don't think about a miss next possesion. I could maybe hit 10% of 3's in an NBA game. That doesn't mean that I don't have enough confidence but that I just suck.

The pressure to be the main scorer for the second unit was too high? Miles' natural reaction to it: i want to start and be an all-star. Let's see how he handles that pressure.

Btw: i would love if he would improve but it's soo unrealistic. i want him to be traded asap especially if he will take minutes away from burks or hayward next season. i would rather have an undrafted prospect or a cheap, young FA instead of him.

It's a bit more than "looks better than Hayward and Bell by default." The team didn't just do better with CJ than Bell, it was a composite winner with CJ. There were only a few Jazz players who were associated with positive team point differential last year. CJ was #2 (behind Fes). That's not the end-all-be-all stat, of course, but it's not something to ignore either. I don't know if CJ will ever "break out," but at 24 he at least seems to be a guy worth keeping around until we have someone (several someones) who are clearly better.

Not the "end all be all stat"? It's a ******** stat.
