Clarification regarding Utah's 2012 first round draft picks

I could easily see them being around a top 5 team in 3 years. Most of the best teams now of course are getting up there in age. OKC obviously an exception.
 
We can do all the wish'n and hopin' and think'n and prayin' we want, have GSW finish with 9th best record and there will still be a non-negiligible chance they make it to the top 3 and we lose it anyway. At least I think the chance will be non-negligable
 
Well I'm glad I asked because now I have some clarity. The reason I got it totally backwards was my interpretation of the team being "protected" in each scenario. And it certainly does get considerably more complicated if we miss out on either of the first rounders this year. Thanks for helping me figure this out.

SO...

If the Warriors end up with the eighth-worst record, or in fact have a better one, we won't get their first round pick this year...and...if we miss the playoffs, we lose our first round pick this year...so we could very well end up without a first rounder at all this year.

So, all we have to do is win out and pull a Tonya Harding on Steph Curry, David Lee, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Bogut.
