Clarkson’s championship value

Mitchell is about to be eligible for a rookie max extension. Gobert is already eligible for a Supermax deal. And everything I think I know about contracts says that two soon-to-be all star appearances are only going to make those $numbers go up. Feels like today’s events basically cement our core group for the next couple years. And guys like Clarkson are the exact types of players who fall off the margins once good teams start paying their dudes.

The way to make up for it is to ask Mitchell to continue to improve in a fairly significant way. Which is incredibly unfair to him, but maybe he’s up for it. And even more importantly Gobert needs to defy the odds completely and sustain his excellence at both ends, through at least the first few years of a HUGE deal. A heavy burden they will be paid handsomely to live up to.

MLE and minimum type dudes will rotate in and out but the ceiling of this team is basically all dependent on those two.

If Clarkson continues to be good and wants to stay in Utah, it will be a huge test of how much $$$ the FO is willing to spend.

Basically we might have a good sense of that based off how Clarkson is handled.

Absolutely this.

Clarkson’s bird rights will be the opportunity for the franchise to come through with that oft promised “we will be a tax payer if we need to be” narrative.

You could make an argument that he wants to get paid, and it’s true. You could make an argument that he wants to start and finish, and it’s true. But there are a few other variables in the equation.

First, I don’t know that anyone else’s offer would be drastically higher than ours would be. If it is, it’s coming from a desperate team. He’s been making about $12M a year in the previous 3 years, and making about $13.5M now, so it’s not like he’s a guy who has yet to get paid. Now you look and see this is his sixth year in the league and previously had spent less than half a year on a playoff team. He’s been the guy putting up big numbers on lottery teams before. There’s no glory in that. So I don’t think we’re losing him to a bottom feeder willing to open up the checkbook for $18M or so. Then you’d have to look at what other playoff teams are willing to offer him a starting role and enough money. I haven’t honestly surveyed that but I’d imagine there aren’t a ton (that are offering a genuine starting spot).

I think it boils down to whether he feels comfortable here and whether he buys in to a 6th man role. If he’s averaging as many points and touches as a sixth man as he got on a crappy team as a starter, then there’s a lot more glory in his current position as he can be a guy winning sixth man of the year and building that resume. Starting on a lottery team won’t bring any recognition. You sell him on getting the Lou Williams status. The only difference is he won’t be closing as much as Lou.

Anyway, outside of a desperate lottery team, I think the money will likely be in a constricted range between the different offers. I think somewhere between $12-15/yr. The question is if we can provide the best environment. I think there’s some positive evidence for that.

If you could extend him, then great.
I think you're right about him being comfortable here. The wild card is what his agent will be selling him once the demand for his services sees the open market this summer.

Yeah, but my argument is him landing in a good situation will have a pretty tight range financially. Him “getting money” will come from a ****** team, and he’s been doing that for his whole career. And I don’t think the ****** teams will be offering significantly more than the good situations. At least not offer enough more to justify returning to a situation like he had in Cleveland or when he was in LA.

I can’t fathom paying him more than 14-15M per. I’d probably throw out an offer of 4/44 and go from there. Was gonna say 4/40 but I wouldn’t want to lowball and risk offending him.

If he gets more than MLE it will be from a ****** team... I think the jazz can extend him now if he’s amicable... I’d offer 4/40... I doubt he gets much more than that.

That seems low to me, but you’re better at calling these shots than I am.
Probably... that’d be what I’d be comfortable giving him if we offered an extension now... I think Hill got 3/27... Lou got 3/24... those are the comps I’d use when negotiating.
